Very sad news, passed away last week at home in London.
He was a master piece if not THE master of African Butterflies.

Oh dear, that's really sad news. Torben Larsen really was one of the top experts, full stop.
RIP.
Adam.

Very sorry to hear that. I had just missed him last time I was visiting the BMNH. I have all his books.

Very sad news, passed away last week at home in London. He was a master piece if not THE master of African Butterflies. Thierry I had the pleasure of traveling with Torben Larsen in Ghana, in 2006. These photos are of Torben (and his ubiquitous pipe!) taking a break at Bobiri Forest Reserve and Butterfly Sanctuary, and compiling the days catch at Atewa Forest Reserve, both known for their rich butterfly fauna largely from his work. He will be missed.

He was a living legend and unfortunately won't get the chance to meet him, I'm sure he had some good stories! R.I.P.

It seems to me that for one reason or another collectors don't seem to live too long, and are laden with health problems.

It seems to me that for one reason or another collectors don't seem to live too long, and are laden with health problems. Unfortunetely, you may be right on one side... it seems that chemicals used by entomologist is one of the reason. There are some proffesional entomologists working in Museum that died by cancer quite early. On another side some others died quite late (after 80 and a few 90, one in belgium reached 100). Note that passion allows the collector to survive late with an aim that helps after a retry.
