I just received this email (below) from Petr Kabatek, and I thought I would forward it on to anyone interested. I started using his insect pins over ten years ago, and I have always been impressed with the quality and the price. At the time - all Petr made was pins - now it looks like he manufactures a few other things. I use his pins exclusively as they are about 50% of the cost of other dealers here in the US. (FYI – shipping to the US is quite reasonable, especially if you and friends can order 10,000 or more at one time). I'm willing to bet that our main north american entomology retailer sells these exact pins for about at ~$5.00 / 100 pins. They note that thier pins are " manufactured in the Czech Republic". I’ve attached two screen shots of his price list - if anyone is interested the link in the email takes you to his complete offerings. He also has forceps and storage drawers for sale - I cannot vouch for these (and if you email him I’m sure he can send the entire price list). I'm sending this out, because I love his pins, and I want him to stay in business! I just got an udated price list from Petr, and he has dropped his prices by about 20%. So packs of 100 pins for USD $2.40 for black and $3.20 for stainless. You really can't beat that price

Hi all,
Just want to agree with John Shuey about Peter's pins... I first dealt with Peter well in excess of 10 yrs. ago (closer to 15) & would highly recommend his pins... same good quality as other brands & are made by the same manufacturers as all pins on sale today in N. Am. (& many in Europe as well I would guess). I haven't made a recent order to Peter, (or anyone else!) in yrs., simply because I bought such a large number for less than half the going rate all those yrs, ago... I too would like to see Peter continue in business...cheap pins, good quality, good service.

Thanks jshuey. I've been looking for this kind of supplier for some time. Looks like I'll be contacting Peter.

I've also been buying all pins from Petr for many years. The quality was always excellent with the exception of the last 10,000. The finish of the black pins is microscopically rough so that the pin vibrates when inserting it into a specimen or label. When the specimen is tiny and glued to a point, then the vibration when pinning the label is so serious, sometimes the beetle pops off. I haven't complained because I'll soon use up this 10K and then I presume it will be back to great quality again. Just some manufacturing glitch I guess. Rick

If I remember correcfly, Peter bought the equipment when one of manufactures of pins went out of business, I think it was the Elephant brand. Could be wrong.
I bought several thousand No.2 in 2013, they were great.
There major retailer of insect pins in North America gets them from China. The quality is absolutely terrible. People buy them because they are cheap. A pack of 100 may only have 98 pcs. Several of the nylon head caps have fallen off and more will do so as you handle. And, one or more will not have points.
You get what you pay for.

Ah, now I understand the problem. Presumably "pretzel" is a US expression.
I use Austerlitz pins available from Omnes Artes, and have never had such problems. However I use rather thicker pins (mostly number 5) as Papilionidae tend to be larger butterflies.

Also I am talking about the side pins, not the actual pin used for penetrating the specimen.
