In my lifetime I have watched the monarch spread across good portions of the globe. Local populations where I live are unchanged.
I wonder why USFWS "forgot" to mention deforestation in the overwintering grounds in Mexico. I wonder why the agricultural pollutants and insecticides have only been killing the monarch since 1990.
LOL just like Ornithoptera from Solomon Islands. USFWS won't let you import them, but nobody does a damned thing about the logging which is the only real concern.
Typical government at work.

The new locations colonized by the Monarch is important information that should be provided to the USFWS in response to their 90-day finding on the petition. They have to consider significant information from the public (even when it argues against listing) in their findings.

It's worth noting that while the press release came from FWS, the petion to list did not. Hence, most of the concerns re/ content and threat - lifted from the petetion, have little to do with FWS. All they are doing right now is evaluating the evidnece, both pro and con re/ listing But in the meantime, they are coordinating an effort to increase Asclepias popuations, especially on Refuge lands and through actions of the Farm Bill - a good thing. I've attached three letters to the News of the Lep Soc that adress the issue. JOhn
