Registration is open for the 2015 Lepidoptera Course, held at the Southwestern Research Station in Portal, Arizona. Apply here research.amnh.org/swrs/education/lepidoptera-courseThe station offers newly renovated dorms for students and the meals are delicious. This is the best opportunity for anyone wanting to work one on one with a Lepidopterist to learn any skill or technique you want. The collecting is phenomenal and we travel around the region to cover a diverse range of habitats. I followed the link and checked out this course. It looks fantastic! Has anyone taken this who is an enthusiastic amateur rather than a pro in training? I'd love to come down from Colorado and give it a go, but will probably have to wait until the kids are out of the nest in a few years.

What's the protocol if you want to keep the specimens you catch?

The class has always been a good mix of graduate students, professionals (museum workers/land managers/rangers/etc), and amateurs. While we give priority to graduate students we have always had extra room for the non-student, and we certainly encourage everyone to apply.
All of the specimens you collect are yours to keep. For the nine days at the station I typically fill 4-6 Schmidt boxes with field pinned moths packed tight. (that's excluding all of the big moths I don't really collect). No permits are required for the places we go. You don't really have to bring your own gear, but are welcome to. Between the instructors we usually have about 4-10 black light traps running each night and the piles of moths are up for grabs once they have been picked through. Of course if you bring your own gear you get priority on the material.

Would enrollment in this course enable you to collect in Cave Creek South Fork which is off-limits to collecting?

I've never heard of South Fork being off limits to collecting, is there a source for this? The area has been closed a lot in recent years due to fire and floods - a few years ago the mountains burned (2011). Last fall there were huge floods that took out most of the south fork area and damaged the road to the SWRS (and stranded people up there for a few days). Things are open now and running in good condition, but last I heard the South Fork will continue to be under a "hard" closure, meaning no access, even on foot.
