Top rarities also go to wealthy Chinese collectors who have entered the fray over the last decade. It's not by chance that bidding wars for rarities on ebay reach silly amounts. Glad that I got mine before all this started.

The sole reason I can think most US collectors may risk going to "the source" is to obtain rarer specimens. The top rarities go to Japan, followed by Europe. By and large, the stuff that gets to USA is the same old. True that top rarities go first to Japan and Europe, before USA. But this is all due to how much Americans are ready to spend vs Japanese and Europeans. I know 2 US Delias collectors who get top rarities (often before all other collectors) because they pay top-price without negotiating. True, that there are more and more Chinese customers on eBay and InsectNet. Good news for the insect sellers.

Russian dealers seem to offer a lot of rare and expensive stuff, but be careful. Some may provide top quality while others can be very disappointing. The really rare items are emailed direct to clients and don't even make it to EBAY. There is a lot of interesting info in the book "Winged Obsession".
