Same weekend! Yes, it's unfortunate but true. Always has been. The Cal-Poly show would have difficulty producing a list of vendors this early. From what I have seen the list usually doesn't finalize until the last three days before the show. The three major vendors, mentioned above are always there and they constitute the bulk of desirable specimens for sale. The rest of the vendors are often private individuals you have never heard of and others who sell other stuff like live tarantulas, toys, honey, jewelry, reptiles, etc. And, as with most shows like this, the best specimens get sold within the first hour. So, arrive early if you can! Check out my photo gallery again and you can get a pretty good idea of what is offered: cthompson.zenfolio.com/calpoly13

The feedback and photos are greatly appreciated Clark. If all of the best specimens are sold within the first hour, I may have to rethink my travel plans. I have no problem getting to a show early, but the thought of rushing around trying to be the first in line for the good stuff has little appeal. What do all of these vendors do for the remainder of two days if all of their best specimens are gone?

After that they sell ordinary stuff to the general public. But isn't that always the case in any show? Here's a tip for you: the hour before the doors open there is a lot of furious trading going on between the vendors as they are setting up their displays. That's when the the real good stuff can be had. All you have to do is sneak in early. It can be done. Just tell the people at the door you are a vendor. They will believe you, since there are no ID badges required on vendors. That's how 'organized' they are.

That's a kind offer Clark But serious fairs should ban sales before the opening hour, as it discourages visitors to come and pay their ticket. In Juvisy, you can enter before if you are an "assistant" but you cannot buy something before the start at 9.30 AM
Entering before, just help you be the first (or second sometimes) at the vendor's table at 9.30 AM.

I am planning on paying at the door. I will try to get there right as they open and see what happens. I believe Clark has nothing but good intentions. A serious buyer at a show like this is only going to be a good thing for the vendors. Thanks to all who have shared their comments, that's why the forums are here.

Come and see me at the InsectNet.com table and give me a bathroom break.

In my experience at various shows, bug or other, the things that move the first hour are the popular showy and presumably "rare" things at high prices. Following that what's sold is the unusual but less popular and the "good deals" stuff. Smart dealers cut prices as the show goes on. The best deals are usually found at the very end when dealers would rather pocket cash than take home.

Well, I must say it was a fun show and was also great meeting everyone. Clark, I love your photo cards - very well done! Some nifty bugs were on display and for sale, well worth the trip! Thanks to all!
