I miss that show, Sargon and I had a great time exhibiting there years ago. Weather was perfect, plenty of space, lots of great people to meet.

Clark, could you tell me why an insect fair much like Cal-poly and the spring show in Calif. has never found its way to the Midwest or Eastern seaboard states? It is EXTREMELY cost prohibitive for most of us from the Mississippi River on over to even consider a trip to Calif. these days. By the time you pay airfare, lodging costs, food, and maybe transportation you wouldn't have a shiny dime left to purchase any specimens ! ! !

I can answer some of that: California's economy is OK and ten years ago was going gangbusters, so everybody had cash to blow on bugs. East coast, not so much. I don't know how to phrase it, but Californians are more "outdoorsy"; I don't mean hunters I mean laypeople...CA has how many world class aquariums vs East Coast? CA's online pro-gun community is ten times more active and a hundred times better funded than the counterpart in NY.
Granted, at the time I had to back out of the CA bug show circuit about 10 years ago, the economy had just suddenly tanked and the hardcore bug buyers, who used to drop $2000 at each show, suddenly were spending $100 or nothing. I don't know how it is now.
I can tell you that I have just entered discussions on holding a bug show on the east coast in upstate NY.

Exoticimports, It's nice to hear someone is "kicking around the idea" of pulling off a bug fair. I had the pleasure some 5 years ago to attend a spring bug fair / reptile show in Toronto Canada. And though the bug fair part of it was small in dealers / sellers; I absolutely loved it. I met Ken Thorne as well as some lesser dealers, got a dozen or so choice items of my choosing, met some Canadian collectors, and otherwise had a most memorable day ! I think some of the problems associated with pulling off bug fairs here in the U.S. involves some measure of sponsorship,a descent location accessible from several neighbor states, and most importantly a group of folks un-afraid to show their wears--- so to speak. A lot of would be sellers or dealers I think have been PETRIFIED by the very thought of openly selling ANY insects due to the unpleasant state of affairs created by F & W. That's right - - - I say like it is ! Best of luck in your endeavor.

I think the problem confronting a bug show in the NE USA is more one of serious interest. Yes, hundreds of local kids show up with $2. But I doubt that it would have the draw as one would find in CA, with people driving or flying hundreds of miles and paying for a hotel. Most of the big shows- reptile, aquarium, gun, etc are out west and/or down south.
But we're going to look into it, and I'm going to see which vendors are interested. No vendors, not much of a show. I wouldn't personally mind a small bug swap, but of course the venue wants a big draw.
I don't think USFWS is really an issue. They're only interested in the big ticket showboat stuff that makes the news. In fact, it is my intention to invite USFWS for educational purposes.

I too have wondered why there aren't any major bug shows in the Eastern USA. Consider it an opportunity to create something! I will support you with free advertising. That is my mission here on InsectNet, to promote the trade and 'stimulate the economy'.

I am planning to attend the Cal-Poly insect fair. It is a long trip for me but it is something I have wanted to do for a long time. Is there any way to obtain a list of vendors who will be there? I intend on doing some serious buying so it would be very helpful to know who is going to be there in advance. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I doubt if you could get a list of vendors from the show sponsors. It keeps changing. We don't actually know who is coming until the very morning of the first day. But there are three vendors who are always there: BioQuip.com (bioquipbugs.com), Alex Bic, and insectworld.com (Dave DeRosa).

Thanks Clark, I did get a contact number of the manager of the show so I will see what info is available. Alex and Dave are two people who I would be interested in seeing.

Clark, I can't understand why the list of vendors is not available. If you have contact info of the fair's manager, please post it.

Lamprima2, I just talked to the manager of the insect fair and he does not have a formal list of vendors at this point. Apparently, a lot of the vendors wait until the last minute to register. He is still waiting for a number of vendors to get back to him. He did say that Bio-Quip and Insect World will be there but he had never heard of Alex Bic. Hopefully, there will be a good selection of bugs for sale this year.

I just looked at the ad for the Montreal Insect Fair held the same weekend as Cal-Poly - it is interesting that their ad actually lists all of the vendors who will be in attendance. I really do think it would be helpful to know ahead of time who will be there when considering whether or not to make a long trip to attend.
