Got this e-mail from Tom...Scam???
I'm writing this with tears in my eyes my Family and I came down here to Ankara, Turkey for a short vacation, unfortunately we were mugged at the park of the hotel where we stayed all cash, credit card and cell were stolen off us but luckily we still have our passports with us.
We've been to the Embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all the bad news is our flight leaves today and I'm having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let us leave until we settle the bills.
Am freaked out at the moment! I will need your help (LOAN) financially. I promise to make the refund once we get back home. Please let me know if you can help?
Thanks, Tom hupf

very classic and old ! that means also you address book is stolen ! It means that Tom's address book was hacked, rather than the recipient's. The scammers hack an e-mail account and send out a sob-story e-mail to all his contacts hoping that some of them will be fooled into sending money. Adam.

Fortunately, I have not had my email or computer hack, YET. I have been faithful to changing my pass words quarterly over the years. However, I learned to use a "Tilde"(~) in my pass word. For all of you who think this is a joke, look in the upper left corner of your key board, just under ESC. Here is a link to the ~: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TildeMost computer pass word systems recognize the tilde ~, however, many are not able to display the ~. If you really what to drive them nuts, underline the ~ !! Insect net will not allow the tilde to be underlined. However, not all pass word systems will let you underline, and if they do, they do not display. And you thought I was an old man. The bumper sticker on the back of my car.......... I may be an Old Dog. But I can still bury the Bone.

A couple years ago I got one from entomologist John Tennent that was quite similar. Not only did they hack his account, but they did their homework because they referenced a likely location and also employed grammar and writing style common to John. Luckily I know that John would have not written a tearful appeal but would have been much more forthright (e.g. TELL me to send money, not ask) and in checking with another entomologist it was confirmed that John was just fine.

I got the same email from John last year, he later confirmed that his address had been hacked. It was almost identical to the one mentioned here. Don't fall for it!

I received a similar scam e-mail from Bob Borth (a US Lepidopterist) today, with almost identical text except that he was apparently on holiday in Manila, Philippines.

I wonder of Bob Borth and Chuck Harp were in the same place recently - because I got scam email from both of their accounts in the last few weeks. This happened to a team from the Cal. Academy a few years ago when they traveled to the Philippines and used an internet cafe.

I too received same Scam E-mails from Harp, Hupf, and Borth. This is a classic scam, don't be taken in by it.

I'm referring to scamming and fraud. Jeff Prill Ah I see, yes it's the risk you run if you want to buy specimens. That's why research about the seller is essential, and the Insectnet trading reports forum is so useful. Adam.
