Does most of your collection come from buying material or from your own collecting efforts? Is it from your own home country or foreign country?
Here is mine: own collecting 90% buying 10% Home country 94% foreign 6%

Most of my collection is from my own collecting. I just started purchasing exotics about 4 years ago. I'd say about 75% my own 25% bought.

Probably slightly over 90% collected, less than 10% purchased. All purchased ones are from other countries except a few Hemileuca that I bought that are from California.

My collection (beetles) is essentially all collected. Maybe about 100 purchased and >65000 collected/pinned specimens. I've collected all over the world, but I haven't tried to quantify what fraction are from my home area in New Mexico, USA.

100% purchased!
But I'd like to go on a real collecting trip in the tropics one day
As for the butterflies flying aroung here I just look at them and don't try to catch them (I used to as a kid)

I would guess approx. 40% bought, 20% trade, and the rest self captured.

A followup: I've been working on Eumolpinae, a subfamily of Chrysomelidae. I counted and I have 332 specimens from North America and 534 specimens from collecting on other continents (Oh and two specimens were purchased). So 60% international- I think this subfamily is not representative of the entire collection because these leaf beetles are particularly abundant and diverse in the tropics. Walking trails in the Amazon or Indonesia I find them very easily, much more so than in the arid southwestern US.

My Delias collection must be own collecting 10% buying 90% The rest of my collections shoud be own collecting 90%, buying 10% as it is mainly the results of my various collecting trips. An interesting article on my blog : Quel objectif macro pour les papillons et les insectes

Living in Northern England your collection would be very poor indeed if you relied on self caught material, I would say mine is 10% self caught and 90% purchased.

I've never purchased an insect... not that I wouldn't want to, I just don't have the luxury of having disposable income.

80% caught, 20% bought or traded for
All the caught specimens are from the USA
I hope to collect in the tropics some day.
