Dear Friends: Jan Pasternak passed away this past weekend, I would like to offer my sincere condolences. We had corresponded off and on through emails and letters over the years. Jan's book "Fluttering encounters in the amazing archipelago" was an enjoyable read, his book touches upon the Southern Tailed Birdwing Butterfly (Ornithoptera meridionalis tarunggarensis). My only regret is that I had not had the chance to meet him in person, as this January 2014, I will be in West Papua New Guinea and I would have loved the chance to share birdwing experiences. He will be missed. Pictured is a pair of his favorite Ornithoptera. Truly, Paul Bodnar Crocodile Wildlife Conservationist

So sorry to hear of Jan's passing. I, too, emailed him many times, bought a signed copy of his book from him and recommended it to others. I even had Jan send a signed book to a dear friend that I bought the book for as a gift. Jan's book is fantastic as were his exploits. He will be missed.

I am saddened to hear this news. I still have the signed copy you and Jan sent to me, and I will never let it go. I have read this book over and over. It takes me to places I can only dream of. This is a great loss to all naturalists, and collectors everywhere. Too bad we collectors are so far apart as a general rule. It would have been an honor to have met him. Rest in peace Jan.

Very very sad news, I am stunned to hear of this, having had very kind mails from Jan who greatly helped in my study of Harry Borch and Ray Straatman . His fluttering Encounters book will always be a inspiration to those wishing to study or see the birdwings in the field. My sincere condolences to his family. Peter.

Rest in peace dear Jan !
Jan was a great field entomologist, a true lover of New Guinea, we will miss him. I had many discussions with him about Biak and Japen, about his explorations in New Guinea, about Delias and Ornithoptera.

Sad news ! Here is a signed copy of his book. I met him in April 2004 when he gave a very interesting lecture about New Guinea during an LFA meeting. It was, following his advices, that I organized our first sojurn in Arfak Mountains.

Jan also personally signed my copies of his book and CD. I also have his 1981 Himeji Shizenshi paper on the rediscovery of O. meridionalis tarunggarensis, which itself was a tribute to Harry Borch.
RIP.
Adam.

How terribly sad. He left his mark in this world and will live on through his published works. I hope he finds some new birdwings in heaven.

That is sad news. His book impressed me greatly because it wasn't another field guide, it shared experiences- as if one could be there with him.
