Hope someone can help me here! I'm a builder and whilst carrying out some remedial works for woodworm, came across these strange fibrous structures attached to the backs of the skirting boards, floorboards and floor joists. They're fibrous like a spider's egg sack (really tough, and stuck fast) and tubular in shape (just over a qtr inch in diameter, 3 to 4 inches in length). They are everywhere! I mean hundreds and hundreds of 'em, in places forming a tough mat nearly 2 inches thick. Some are obviously old (dirty and brown), whilst some relatively new (as in the attached pic)- suggesting that whatever it is, has been living down there for some time. What are they and are they dangerous to the structure of the floor or more importantly the health of the customer? I've only taken a few of the boards up, for fear of angering/disturbing whatever might be under there. Any help would be really appreciated. Oh, I'm in England, UK if that helps. Attachments:
