A few years back, during my college years, I was walking along a sidewalk and came across a large web with a huge spider in it, perhaps an orb weaver or something like that. I just happened to have a bag of Funyuns in my hand, and just for fun, decided to put a bit of one in the spider's nest. To my surprise, the spider ran over to it and started chomping the hell out of it, I could hear the Funyun crunching under his bites.
Obviously, if I had put a bit of stick or leaf in his web, he wouldn't run up and start munching the hell out of it, so how did the spider know that the item was food? Do you think it was by scent (organic compounds?), sight (coloration), or what? Or was it just blindly testing the item to see?

how do you know that the spider thought it was prey and not just defending itself against a foreign intruder?
