It seems that every time I fall asleep and dream, no matter the subject of the dream, somewhere in it I stop and collect some of the most fascinating insects. Even when I was trying to escape the contamination zone when I watched a nuclear helicopter crash at a stunt show, I stopped to collect some big moths off of a hedge bush. No matter the subject of the dream, I find myself excited by the catch of a lifetime and have to stop whatever I am doing to make sure the insects do not get away. When I awaken, I do not find myself reflecting on the main subject matter of the dreams, but rather I wake up with a feeling of disappointment that the insects I collected were not really in my grasp.

wait until you start planning your whole life around entomology, holidays to the best collecting spots even though your family has NO interest in the hobby, you plan christmas around entomological fairs, even walking the dog has to be a collecting trip, every time you are out and see a bug you feel a pain in your guts because your net is at home, welcome to the "illness that is entomology, nothing beats it.

I am already there. I cannot afford any kind of holiday, but with no family to worry about, I can collect all I want around here without hindrance. As far as that pain in my guts, I realized that one a while back and now have a net that stays in my car at all times along with envelopes and various containers. Everywhere I go I am on the lookout for that next specimen.

It is addictive, but then that is the joy.

When you have more than 10 posts on Insectnet, you are automatically signed up for the insect obsession club and monitored closely by psychologists and customs........
You know when you are obsessed when you are asked about an inkblot and you reply "It looks like an acherontia atropos.... no wait, lachesis."

I once dreamed that I was down in French Guyana, and hundreds of Titanus giganteus flew into my lights. Most of them were 40 feet long. Jeff Prill

All my dreams are alway about going to Borneo, Amerzon and the lower Hemalaya. So far I've been to at least two of them and just one more to go to make all my dreams came ture. I also dreamed about catching my own D. antaeus from Tibet but I couldn't believe it when I really found it with my last trip. It was the best feeling I've ever experienced.

you are already in the boat.so do we. my deam are:PNG,India,Sri Lanka,Fiji and the other oceanic islands,RSA.Brasil. one of my target of 2012 is Hemisodorcus macleayi (males do not come to light trap, females seldomlly do)when i was nearlly disappointed, they were found! one day one male,3 males were collected, the last male is super large and awesome!i didn't expected males like to play with an ugly tree's leafs. ;D leafs are their toys, and they are my toys.
ithought i was in hallucination but it is real. it should be my most beautiful Lucanidae from my collection. can't wait to upload a photo when i am back home.

The only dreams I've ever had that are related to insect-collecting are where my collection gets destroyed somehow/by someone. I guess with me it is not obsession but paranoia.

My 2 most vivid dreams involved spiders. One was of a large bird eater dropping from the ceiling onto my face. I jumped up and turned on the light and looked for it until I realized that I would not have seen it on the ceiling if I had to turn on the light to look for it.
The other involved walking through a field until I saw tarantulas with odonata wings rise up in an inverted V shaped formation dragging a silken net…….

I had a dream once of collecting swallowtails with some rather interesting tails- on their front wings. I drew a picture of the individual after the fact and it actually looks surprisingly plausible. I'll have to post a picture of the drawing sometime.
