Hi John,
the correct spelling is Hohentwiel (without "z")
This place is ca. 130 km from my home. Very beautiful old castle ruin but sadly no more apollos !
Regards Manfred

Thanks Manfred! The old data label had the correct spelling, I made the error when I typed up my newer "show" label Seems a lot of the Central European apollo ssp. are vanishing, I guess a lot of the blame is due too the fact that many of the Alpine habitats are being converted from alpine meadows too farmland John

It's not the major problem John. There are still some pristine habitats there. Real problem is global warming, in Central Europe, apollos don't have higher altitude to refuge in as they can do in the Alpes.
Of course pesticids and habitat destruction do not help...

One thing, the region in Singen is not alpine as alpine is a region above tree level (~2000m) and Singen is close to Lake Constance (~400m). We are talking here about a German lowland population like the one close to Koblenz. p.S., including that what Radovan said, never met one of the highland populations of P. apollo over 1400 m

Radovan < what do you mean by 'succession" ?
Let's take French examples. Apollo is still in rather good shape in the Alpes and Pyrenees but in lower mountain ranges (Vosges, Massif Central...), they cannot go higher and disappear. Of course there are still some lowland population (like the giant local form venaissinus in Luberon).
Claude, in Haute-Savoie in Flaine, there you can see some apollo at about 1700m.

Very sad. Deforestation does not seem to be responsible for decline in French Massif Central...

in the Valais(Switzerland) I have seen on Simplon pass(Sempione) once 2 P. apollo flying even between 2000-2200m,first I thought they are Parnassius sacerdos ,but for sure they dont live up there ,there are populations on both sides of the pass at much lower altitude(one population is at 1500m) Robert

In Greece, all populations of all subspecies of apollo fly at high altitude : on Pindos Mt. the ssp.graecus flies at 1700 m. , on Erymanthos Mt. the ssp.atrides above 1500 m. ,on Rhodopi Mt. the ssp.rhodopensis at 1300-1500 m.
