So what do you guys wear on your head when collecting? I know the environment plays a roll (Arid - Tropical). I have used a baseball hat, a cowboy hat, a mesh "bush" hat, a beekeepers mask, and a pith helmet. Each seemed to have its own value but the styrofoam core pith helmet is my favorite.

I wear a tan denim hat with a rim that I pull down over my eyes. Have worn such hats for many years, find that baseball hats don't keep ticks out of my hair when I'm in the field. Plus, in the tropics I could get it wet and could just simply ring it out during the rains. Jeff Prill

Here in the tropics Nth Qld in Australia I wear the broad rimmed straw hat , cheap and easy to recycle , ticks and mites can be there and a bit of bug deterent such as rid rubbed on the inside of the hat helps . But some bugs will get you somewhere on your body sooner or later , been lucky so far , one tick on the head had no hat on ended up in hospital overnight real sick. Just the other day something ?? got me on the back of the leg , looks like a bad burn when I sit feels like a needle stuck in me sure good pain.Maybe a hairy larva or bug of some sort ? But in 25+ years collecting veiwing many perils only problems so far touch wood , wear shorts no shoes all the time.

I always wear a floppy hat with a brim for head and neck protection from the sun; you can also rinse it out in a stream to cool you down a bit. Once, in the Tien Shan, when I forgot it on a day trip, a local lent me a baseball cap - never again - it protected the top of my head but the tops of my ears got so badly burnt they hurt for weeks.

For hot days, the pith helmet keeps the head dry, shaded, and cool. I get a few strange looks but I "look" like a collector then. I get fewer complaints then by people. When I've been collecting in Texas, it seems that the locals respect a man in a well worn cowboy hat. When in Rome....

For daytime, I have used for decades....an Outback hat of fur felt. It keeps my head warm and dry. I actually wore this type of hat---before----Indiana Jones. I tell my students in school that Indiana Jones got his hat idea from me For night, I use a camo-baseball-hat rigged with two headlights---one red and one white.

In Central America it's a baseball Cap treated with permethrin. Keeps the bot fly larvae from boring into my scalp. I've 4 of these puppies in me over the years, and they always go for the back of my head. I usually bring them to the states (probably an illegal importation) and have my doctor cut them out of my head!

My hair doesn't usually allow me to wear hats but if I'm hunting at night I'll typically put on a hood

I usually wear a floppy denhim hat, usually camouflaged army style. When in Scotland I also often wear a midge net over it!
