Hello,
With reference to my thread in the field reports section I am looking for publications on butterflies of the North Maluku/Moluccas and thought I would post my question here. I am planning a trip there and am trying to find everything useful!
I have D'Abreras Butterflies of the Australian region, but am looking for something with a bit more text.
There seems to be one article in the NEVA journal: Peggie, D., Rawlins, A. & Vane-Wright, R.I. 2005. An illustrated checklist of the papilionid butterflies (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) of northern and central Maluku, Indonesia. Nachrichten des entomologischen Vereins Apollo, N.F. 26(1/2): 41–60.
I have contacted NEVA and hopefully it is possible to order a copy.
There also seem to be two further interesting articles by Vane-Wright and Peggie, but I do not know where to get old issues of these journals. Maybe someone can help!
Peggie, D., Vane-Wright, R.I. & Yata, O. 1995. An illustrated checklist of the pierid butterflies of northern and central Maluku (Indonesia). Butterflies, Japan (11): 23–47.
Vane-Wright, R.I. & Peggie, D. 1994. The butterflies of northern and central Maluku: diversity, endemism, biogeography, and conservation priorities. Tropical Biodiversity 2(1): 212–230.
If anyone can recommend further reading it would be much appreciated!
/Tom

I don't know if money plays a role...if not then I can warmly recommend "Butterflies of the South East Asian Islands" by Tsukada, they cover the whole region and even more. I saved a year to get part 2 about Danainae and Pieridae and it was worth every single cent of the 300€ I paid

Here is the area that the books do cover: "The area here dealt with covers the Andamans and Nicobars, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, ]ava, the Philippines and Natunas, Celebes, Talaud, Sangir, Sula, the Lesser Sundas, Tanimbar and all the islands west of Weber's line." I am very sorry if my tip is wrong and I do not have the book here at hand to check now but I was sure that for most species on the species map he also includes the ssp. from Maluku islands? Does that mean he does only include the ssp. if the species widely appears in the other covered islands and there may be species on Maluku distributed troughout PNG that may not be in the book ? Anyway, it still is a wonderful book, just not for Maluku Is.

I agree, Tsukada & Nishiyama's work is a wonderful book. I have Part one, but like Adam pointed out it only covers the islands as far east as Sulawesi.
For the Danaidae Ackery & Vane-Wright's book is great of course..
For the birdwings there seem to be quite a few titles. Which one would be best? Does anyone have Hirotaka Matsuka's Natural History of Birdwing Butterflies? It seems to be a great work, but the Japanese Yen being strong at the moment, it is expensive! I would prefer to hear some opinions before ordering!
A bit off topic, but they publish a lot of great stuff in Japan. I like Tsukada's book because it is written with the collector in mind, although it might not be scientific in the traditional sense.
Has anyone had a chance to read Part one of the new THE BUTTERFLIES OF THAILAND (Based on Yunosuke KIMURA Collection). From the looks of it it is quite detailed.
