For amateurs of rarely shown leps : Phaedyma shepherdi gregalis from Biak island (West Papua), Warsansan, August 2009, Leg. Pequin It is very different from Australian ssp. and looks for me closer to Phaedyma fissizonata from Bismarck Archipelago. Phaedyma was before included in Neptis genus. I would add this specimen had a typical Limenitidae behaviour, watching over its territory from a leaf about 3 meters upon a little path in the forest. Attachments:

I have Phaedyma fissizonata pisias from Kieta on Bougainville and it is remarkably similar to your specimen. The main difference is that mine lacks the outer line of spots on the hindwing...
Fascinating to think that the whole island of New Guinea separates them and no other Phaedyma is similar in that whole area...
A very interesting capture, Olivier...

Hi, Zdeno, there was a paper published in our or the later SHILAP magazines, I think it dealt with all butterfly fauna or maybe it was only Papilionidae (it´s all blurry in my mind ). In any case I owe you an e-mail, so you must get some further info in the topic when I get in touch again with you. Regards, Alejandro A.

Barry < I agree, for me ssp. gregalis better matchs fissizonata than shepherdi. Maybe the classification is false and maybe also fissizonata and shepherdi are the same species. If an expert wanna study this, it is an interesting subject.
Zdeno < Phaedyma species are rather close, so it is hard to say without picture but P. shepherdi and fissizonata do not fly on Timor. On Timor, there should be 2 or 3 Phaedyma species including the endemic Phaedyma mimetica. With a picture I can tell you.

Hey Dunciiiiiiiii ! I was thinking to go there, but then again...what for ? Nothing to see there for me. And the main thing is - big earning and big savings. I m going to Timor again in a few months and this time it will be only an entomological trip, so need to save up a couple of £ . Alejandro > that will be great. Thanks ! Olivier > it means, that I have to spread that tiny thing ? ;D...wont be that easy for me, but will do my best ! Thanks anyway !

I am afraid so. But Phaedyma are rather big species, as big as Apatura iris for P. shepherdi gregalis. If yours is tiny, it may not be a Phaedyma.

Ok Olivier. I will do it...dont laugh about the results then, okay ? ;D Anyway I dont really know what could be rather big, but these are something like our sapho... Dunci > thank you ! First time it was just exploring the Island - localities, people, womans , etc...now I know where to go ( I mean, where to find nice girls , so it will be easier and will bring much more. The other thing is, that I will get " hands " from timoreese Animal&Plant Quarantine Ent Dept, tools, car, etc...so now it will be trouble free expedition...last time we got lost, car broke down ( left suspension arm and then after 20 miles front break pads gone...), we were hazarding with our lifes - swiming with crocodiles, and more things what I wouldnt do again. Anyway, lol...is there anyone who would grant the expedition ? In return would give some specimens in desired quantity...honestly...anyone
