With the cancellation of Juvisy and Frankfort fairs, Insectorama Fair in Seraing (Belgium) will be the biggest insect fair in Europe (with Modena) ! Don't miss it if you can attend it, it will be the 24th October 2021 in Seraing. 65 insect dealers from Belgium, France, Germany, Czech Republic... ! Don't miss it if you can attend it.

Dang, I would visit both fairs if:
A. I didn't live across the Atlantic Ocean.
B. Didn't have to spend boo-koo bucks for a round trip ticket to Europe.
C. Didn't have to stay there for 2 weeks after my arrival to clear each country's (possible) Covid-19 arrival / departure restrictions.
D. Had about $5,000 to freely spend; so I could "shop till I dropped"...
E. Positively knew that I could get back into the US without my stuff getting confiscated at customs !
Otherwise, what a great experience -- seeing parts of Europe and enjoying the hobby to my heart's delight !
I really do envy our European members and their ability to enjoy such fairs (which we don't have here).
Hope you don't mind my having my moment of levity here on the forum.

Yes on normal years, we have around 10 big fairs in Europe. I have never understood why American insect associations and/or American insect sellers have never organized some big fairs in the US. It would be very succesful for sure. In Italy, they share the successful Modena fair with malacologists and it is a win/win event for both communities.

There are/ were shows in Pomona, Los Angeles, and Montreal.
To answer your question why there aren’t more shows in USA, I believe it’s: 1. McDonaldsization. The dumbing down of science, and almost everything else. From butterflies to philharmonic to exotic aquarium fish, “good enough” is good enough. The center of dull is Rochester, NY which exhibits deep, introspective interest in nothing. 2. Free space, open nature, and easy travel. Why buy when I can fly and collect from the Arctic to jungle in one week? 3. Urban vs rural. Europe is much more urban with smaller homes, small or no yards. So purchase collecting (of anything small) is more popular. 4. Availability of local selection. In my area we have five species of Papilio, one undescribed. A dozen or more sphingids, six saturnidae, etc.
Overall, whatever Europeans and Japanese do, they are much more discerning. They want higher quality, rarer, finer. From ovens to sportscars to dead bugs, Europeans demand the best, and Americans prefer quantity.

The problem with the two California shows that once were held is that they were held so far away (for many of us).
If you lived anywhere east of the Mississippi you had air flight costs to deal with as well as lodging costs and food during your stay there. This would be a costly venture; before even buying one specimen !
Collectors out west had it made because their air flight would be half the cost and some could even drive there...
I've heard about the Montreal show for years; though I have not heard of going on the last 2 years. Again the problem with that show was that it mean't crossing the border twice and then the lodging costs if you drove -- again using up precious money for specimens.
I think the hobby has taken such a downturn in interest here (as of late); we may never see those shows even in California !

Yes, we know that the US is a big country, but the two biggest fairs in Europe - Juvisy and Frankfurt - attract people from all over the world. I have seen several Americans, Canadians and Japanese there, and many Russians, as well as people from all over Europe. I travel to both every year from England, OK - I can drive to Paris, but I have to fly to Frankfurt, and it's not a problem, although how easy it will be when they start up again post-Brexit I don't know.

Question: When you are travelling by plane and buy pinned specimens, do you onboard with the specimens as hand luggage or as checked in luggage please? I really would like to visit a fair once Covid restrictions are over and I need to know how's best to on board the insects. Thanks.

I always carried them on the plane. Even with many extra pins to secure the specimens, I never had any problem.
Though, there will be some clown that some day turns it into a catastrophe for someone.
I would NOT check in set specimens for cargo, I don’t care if they are suspended in gelatin in a Pelican case. Ship them with a common carrier instead.
