Furthest south canadensis flies near here is the black hills in South Dakota or southeast Montana.

We're done here in NE USA. Nothing but rapae, some eurytheme, and tharos. Mike, you finished? BTW, that's an incredible canadensis. You forgot to mention all those Monarchs π Most of the monarchs in Finger Lakes, NY have already migrated south. There's a few still around, and I still see some crossing the lake from Canada, but late August was the height of the season; at the height it's the most common species. In years past I've observed thousands washed up on the lakeshore following storms. They tend to fly low- less than 3m above the water- so big waves knock them down. This year it was pretty calm during migration, so most made it and there were days I could see a half dozen reaching the southern shoreline at any one time, with more behind them. It's actually quite an event to watch, as they finally finish the 100km trip across the lake from Canada. It's not like they darken the skies as do other migratory species, but if you figure six hitting half a km of shoreline every two minutes, and this goes on for three weeks over 400km of shoreline, that's a lot of monarchs- in fact, over 4 million by rough calculation. That doesn't even count those that migrate west or east of the lake, or that start in NY, that's 4 million that cross the lake. Chuck

Here in Ontario compare to last season the number of D.plexippus is very low this year. It was actually very poor season for most of the species. The only species that was up was P.polyxenes.

Here in the Great Lakes region we still have one swallowtail (holdout) species present; albeit only as a few individuals -- P. polyxenes.
Funny thing is that I have collected up males as late as mid-October within two of the last five years.
It remains our only September/October papilio...
