So my specimen photos have been terrible. I definitely need a better way to take photos, and I know a ring light is the way to go.
A few years ago I researched ring light setups, but didn't purchase. So again, I started with Google, searching for "Ring Lights."
One of the top Google returns was for Cosmopolitan magazine. Yeah, right. I figured it's like one of those ads where they stick in your keywords and past searches. You know, like "Buy your Mustang GT500 Ornithoptera at Walmart!"
But I was wrong! Indeed, Cosmopolitan magazine did do a an article on ring lights. And they are in line with all other Google returns on ring lights- used for selfies! ALL OF THEM!
And I wonder, how narcissistic have our youths become that they need a ring light for selfies?

Well be glad that they do, because now you can buy a high quality ring light for a very low price. I remember that I wanted one about 10 years ago for specimen photography and it was impossible to get something decent, or the price was outrageous compared to what you would get.
Nowadays, quite a lot of people work with recorded video (YouTube, instructional videos for online classes) and this is where the market is.

A few days ago you called me out for labelling, now you're calling our youth narcissists, interesting. There is a difference between a general observation of society and a personal attack on a contributor here. Sure would be nice if we could ever keep on the effing original topic around here.

What is the topic? Making fun of youth or taking pictures of specimen?

What is the topic? Making fun of youth or taking pictures of specimen? To answer the first question all you need to take good quality pictures of specimens is a decent quality digital camera, a steady hand and basic computer skills. As to the second question it has been shown time and time again that narcissism has no age limit. I find a lot of younger people actually quite pleasant company and not in the slightest narcissistic.

Great photos are not always easily taken . I do find it interesting that certain members only like posts that are derogatory ; regardless of the topic heading they fall under. .

Not that I take great photos, but I have been using a home-made ring-light stand for about 10 years. I hacked the deign from this write-up - web.archive.org/web/20160914170841/http://www.andeanbutterflies.org/supporting_files/manual_fotos_TABDP.pdfBasically - it's just a plywood box with a hole in the top and a ring light inside the box. The ring-light and ballast was purchased from a big-box store, but I replaced the bulb with a tungsten-light (I'm guessing that LED would work just as well today). I added the stand from an old dark room photo enlarger for the camera support. (these could be purchased cheep 10 years ago). All told - I probably had $60 invested in this contraption at the time. Here is a look at the stand, and a raw photo and cleaned up photo (at 20% resolution). John

Ah Thanks John. Does it need a box or is just the ring light enough?

Ah Thanks John. Does it need a box or is just the ring light enough? Chuck Well - this one is a florescent tube, so the box does a couple of things including shielding the camera lens from light coming from the back of the tube and makes sure that every photo has the same light intensity. Directional lights would not have this problem. But the box and copy stand do other things that allow you to standardize your exposure. For example I used a small aperture (f22) to increase depth of field, and a long 0.3 second exposure to compensate for the small aperture. Also note that I use a camera with built-in shake resistance to get crisp images at long exposures. And the enlarger stand is marked so that I get standard magnifications for small, medium, large and huge bug photos. Very customized to meet my personal needs. j

Hello,
I know very, very many nice young people, idiocy or intelligence is present at any age. That, such remarks, opinions are as old as humanity. Seneca was already complaining about youth around the year 50. And who led us into wars? Old, mean men. That in addition The Jshuey facility is already perfect. Above all, that there is a color scale so that other people can adjust the color. I'm using a Nikon that uses RAW format with a gray card. You can then adjust the colors with software from Nikon.
