If as a collector you have ever had a penchant for Phasmida then you are likely to either have, or seen, or lusted for a LARGE (male) example of what has been called the Spiny Devil (Eurycantha horrida).
During the collecting heydays of the 70's, and 80's and maybe just into the 90's big, showy, exotic looking specimens (pieces) such as this were not un-commonly marketed at rather cheap cost -- out of New Guinea.
However, troubling and even dangerous times began to manifest themselves and the primary institute responsible for gathering specimens and their further sale and dispersal was forced to close. Hence, since the early 90's nothing much gets out of New Guinea any longer (unless via the blackmarket).
Anyway, this impressively large (male) is mine and I have seen a fair number of much smaller ones. And while all who have a strong or habitual liking of stick insects will say "yep, that's THE spiny stick"; well I've got another one that you have likely never seen AND it's quite a bit "spiny-er"...
Below, my unidentified species from Sarawak Borneo.
