I have been breeding beetles for years in Japan but since moving to the US I have never had the opportunity. I may have an opportunity in the coming month to order some live Dyanstes Granti from Arizona and have it sent to Illinois. I'm wondering if it's legal to receive live beetles in the mail being in Illinois? I've never done this before so I have absolutely no clue and online searches have found nothing. Thanks in advance!

Strictly speaking- shipping live insects out of state into another requires a permit. Realistically, you can ship anything through the USA mail and not have an issue. Many of us routinely ship livestock. I have received live granti through the mail before, make sure and use priority shipping. Now and then, Insectnet members will offer beetle livestock, I've bought live Dynastes tityus, and Lucanus elephus.

Thank you so much for your reply! I’ll be looking out for people who may be selling some beetles in this forum as well, do you know the best threads to look under?

The forum does not allow advertising of items for sale, but you can keep an eye on the InsectNet Marketplace, link at the top of the page or direct to live insects here: marketplace.insectnet.com/live-insects/Unfortunately there are currently no live insects on offer. Adam.

Usually, even though there is a classifieds for beetles, sellers typically list them in lepidoptera as well, you're unlikely to miss anything. You can also post a want ad, be sure and read the warnings about doing that. There are sellers I know who have listed beetles before, Ted Frey, Nathan Boob and I think Greg Bingaman. When I bought my granti from AZ, I solicited someone near Payson and he was very helpful, one of the males he sent was a monster.

If you are still interested in keeping live beetles as pets, try contact Insect Brothers at: insectbrothers.orgor directly contact: admin@insectbrothers.com I was raised in South Korea, so I know very well how you feel to breed or collect in the US. haha

Don't forget that Illinois has it's own Dynastes- D. tityus! You could breed those legally in the state, they can be pretty common at lights down south in the Carbondale area. You can also get stag beetles with them (and breed those too!).

This site has Dynastes granti and D. tityus listed but availability may be limited bugsincyberspace.com/product-category/live-pet-bugs/beetles/
