Hi, I live in Alaska and frequently hike in our mountains (surrounding Anchorage). Many times have I hiked up and not seen insects, only to find a veritable swarm at the top. Yesterday we encountered a similar phenomenon but this time with an amazing diversity of creatures. Does anyone know why insects might collect at the top like this?

It would be interesting to know what insects you encountered, and what flora is present. Perhaps, they were tired... I'm sorry. Seriously, insects congregate for different reasons, to regulate temperature, butterflies do something called "hilltopping" a behavior collectors take advantage of, they are looking for mates usually- the butterflies. Ladybird beetles congregate around rocks when they emerge from hibernation, I've collected thousands that way, it's amazing to see. Wind may be blowing light insects upwards.
