Greetings to all eBay Insect Traders. I have created a Facebook eBay Insect Classified Group (search for eBay Insect Classified Group in Facebook). This group is only for eBay sellers dealing with insects. Any other dried insect ads will be deleted. You instantly have access to over 500 insect fans (and growing) from around the world (N.America, Europe, Asia (that includes Japan and you know how passionate Japanese are about insects). All this for free. Just join the eBay Insect Classified Group and post your eBay ads there. Hope to see you there. P.S. If you have any insect friends on Facebook, don't forget to add them to the group. www.Insect-Collection.com

I had a hard time searching for it. I had to do a search with the keywords "insect classified" and nothing else. If you type "ebay insect classified" nothing is found.

Interesting.
I have one question : does all your facebook friends see what you post on this group ? Or is it a private group and only members see what you post.
I am not sure I want all my colleagues to know my hobby.

It is a limited group on Facebook, Olivier... If you want a bit of secrecy then do not join social networking sites such as Facebook... Aaaaah. too late, I see you have... I will try not to mention your hobby when posting with you on there, but your profile piccy of Delias shunichii surely gives it away Barry

I joined Facebook, but closed down all the privacy options. All they know about me is my name, e-mail address and IP address (so approximate location too), but it's scary how many people they suggest as "People you may know" who I do indeed recognise, some from here or eBay, some from other Leps online groups and some from my other main passion, West Bromwich Albion. Some of them I have e-mailed with privately occasionally, but not on any public internet sites. They also suggest Leps people/dealers who I do not know. The worrying question in my mind is how do they know that these people may know me? Adam.

Barry < In fact, I have created a second account on Facebook for my entomological passion with the shunichii picture. I have 2 facebook accounts, one with my colleagues, friends and family... and another one with my other family : the crazy butterfly collectors!
Adam < Facebook shows you the friends of your friends in case you know them.

wollastoni...That is always the best plan, Olivier... adam...If you use Facebook in such a restricted way, then I would suggest that there really is little point in belonging to it... Barry

Olivier,
I don't have any friends on Facebook, so that's not the explanation. No-one can find me either as I closed that function. As I said above, all Facebook knows about me is my name , e-mail address and approximate location.
Barry,
Actually the only reason I joined is so that I can look at the photos of my brother's daughter when I want to, as he put them all there. I can also look at Facebook pages if necessary (it seems some webpages are Facebook based, and you have to be a member to access them). I don't have time or the inclination to use Facebook the way most people do.
Adam.

Like Adam, I am primarily using facebook to view family pictures, mostly posted by my daughters or daughter-in-law. It is probably a great way to make many contacts, but be careful in listing friends. In the early days I started listing some contacts/friends, and would always look at their pages first or ask some questions regading their interests, looking for those interested in Sphingidae or Saturniidae if I did not already know them. As I was visiting some of these pages, I noticed that scam artists were being listed as friends, even by some of the very dependable people who were extending friend invitations. I feel there are some real dangers of good honest folk lending credibility to scammers if they are not careful with friend requests. I prefer to communicate with most people via regular email. Maybe that will change in future as it does seem that many potential customers (I sell Saturniidae eggs, pupae and cocoons), especially among the younger set, are really into the social media. For me, having a whole bunch of facebook friends for business purposes might backfire. Instead of purchasing from me (have a registered business, keep records and pay taxes on profits), they might be inclined to ask around the friends list to see if anyone else has better deals. I don't mind being competitive, as long as we are on a level playing field, and i would hate to learn that somebody got scammed by contacting someone on my facebook friends list. I have actually been declining all facebook friends requests lately from anyone inside North America, for the reasons mentioned above, even if I know they are good people. i also try to work with new contacts ouotside of north America by recommending regular email correspondence. Oh dear, Bill... You had better 'unfriend' me... At the last count I had over 3100 'friends' and unless you have your settings screwed down properly our 47 mutual 'friends' are sitting at the centre of a huge spidery web with the potential of access/being accessed by, a horde of shadowy anonymous he, she or its...

Adam < Facebook also proposes you other members of your groups as "people you may know". You must have joined a group of "insect collectors" and put West Bromwich Albion as your favorite team on facebook...

No, as I told you, I haven't given any information to Facebook at all and don't have any 'friends' or joined any groups. I did find out that one person who I have e-mailed privately with who also showed prominently in the 'people you may know section' had allowed Facebook to access his webmail address book, so probably that's how Facebook knows that I know him.
However there are also many people who I recognise but have never e-mailed privately with (such as people whose names I know from e-mail groups but I don't actually know them myself) so that doesn't explain all the suggestions. It worries me that such networking could be dangerous, as Bill suggests above, or maybe even worse in some circumstances, especially naiive kids etc.
Adam.

Let me join in here. As you may know I created facebook.com/insectnet. Has anyone seen it? My question is like oehlkew's question: will it benefit InsectNet or draw traffic away from InsectNet? (My intention was to draw more new people into InsectNet, of course.)
