I've been trying to prepare some insects for photography. A number of them are wasps and bees and I'm having a heck of a time getting the jaws to relax to a point that I can open them. Any tips on speeding that process up?

Any tips on speeding that process up? Try to inject warm water with insulin syringe to the mouth, wait few minutes and then try gently manipulate jaws. It works for large butterflies and moths to loosen the wings .

Seep dry gin into the joints w a tiny brush letting capillary action suck in the gin.....wait......try to move. Not yet.....repeat.....wait a few......try again. Gin works great to loosen those tough stiff mandibles/legs/antennae etc.

Maybe a "one for you, one for me" method would work best

The use of Gin to loosen mandibles goes way back and originated in the UK.
It also works exceptionally well on woman.

inject ammoniac with insuline serynge (more efficient than hot water or alcool) I've been thinking about using syringes to inject liquid into the backs of the overly-dried-out eyes of flies and damselflies to temporarily plump them up to be photographed (I assume it wouldn't last for too long unless I used some type of gel that wouldn't evaporate). Have you ever tried that sort of thing?

never tried gel and will not in the future. I used amonniac for long time for mandibules of Lucanid and prionid that are often very hard to relax. except if somone tell me it is a very good way of course
