Has the Coronavirus affected your collecting routine or where you collect? Many cities have issued curfews or stay-at-home orders. Are you still able to get to your favorite spots or are you forced to remain indoors?

Here in Oregon, it's still early, depending on what you're after. All state parks are closed, and campgrounds, not a big deal for the experienced, I learned to avoid other people and campgrounds after "losing" a kayak and a Goal Zero battery on separate occasions. There are stay at home "orders" here, but I think it's more of a wish list of good behavior. Here on the coast, they just had to shut down all the motels to keep people away. Hopefully, this will be over in 3 or 4 weeks, otherwise it's going to be what I've got in the fridge...

We had snow yesterday so no. And while we did hike last week and find a cecropia cacoon, I also picked up a tick. So field season for me is over thanks to the Lyme epidemic.

We've had about 6 hours of sunshine in the past 10 days here in the southern Appalachians, so butterfly collecting has been pretty much out of the question. I did see a few C. ladon, P. rapae, and the odd Colias when the sun did shine, but mostly we've been totally socked in. And nightly downpours have ruled out moth collecting too. So I'm spreading a lot of the backlog from the freezer, and curating. Thinking about making new printed labels for all the drawers...
Hang in there,

Still kinda snowy where I live too but I saw my first cabbage white today.
Biggest immediate issue is that Bioquip is closed so I can't order more supplies, likely I'll be forced to stick closer to home this year as well. I was planning on quitting my job and doing some travelling with my family this spring and summer but that seems kind of unwise now.

I have five (5) Bait Traps set out. Three(3) in the Mantua Wetlands and two (2) along the Cuyahoga River Estuary at two(2) access area's. I have seen no one out and about in these areas.
A string of warm Spring days with temperatures in the mid to upper sixties and lows in the mid fifties, my Bait Traps should get busy. I may even put out a Light Trap or two during the warm up.
I did find a Lithophane patefacta at a Speedway Gas Station in Aurora.
I will admit, I broke my "No Contact Rule" this AM. I stopped at the drive thru of the Dunk-in-Dounut and purchased two Large Cinnamon Rolls and a large Black Coffee.
Here is how I avoid traffic tickets in Aurora, Ohio. As I pulled into the Dunk-in-Donuts this AM, an Aurora Police Car pulled in behind me. I made my purchase and paid for the policeman's order behind me at the same time. I have done this at various drive thurs restaurant in Aurora and Mantua. I also do this in Streetsboro and with Portage County Sheriff's Department as well. I have a Vanity Lisence plate: MOTH. They remember me.
Try this in your area and they will remember you as well.

Greetings,
My wife and I have cancelled vacation plans for early April - both our birthdays and our anniversary fall in the same week (anniversary and wife's b-day on the same day!) - which included some collecting plans as well. The weather has been cool as well and things are just now starting to show signs of Spring arriving. However, our neighbor's daffodils began coming up around the 6th of March and are now in full bloom - some hyacinths are up too - way too early for both.
I'm working from home for the next two months, but luckily, I can justify a day in the field as "work time" so I'm sure I'll sneak into the woods somewhere close to at least blow the stink off myself. I had planned to go to Georgia in May, but that's cancelled for now as well. I do have a ton of backlog material to prepare and curate, so I can catch up on a lot of stuff here in the house.
Leptraps - while it may not save you a ticket if you get too wild out on the road - your gesture of paying for the cops' meals is a really cool thing to do, and I'll watch for an opportunity to do that myself - either for police, EMS or healthcare workers - they're the front line against this coronavirus scourge. At work, folks have been doing something similar - paying for 2 'breakfast bowls' and instructing the server to give a free one to the third or fourth person to order one, to keep it anonymous. Small gesture, but at $2.50 it is really a cheap way to just be nice for the sake of it.
Everybody stay safe and healthy, Bandrow
