In one of my facebook groups it was noted by a Florida breeder that she has observed Monarchs and Queen butterflies mating. She feels the offspring would be sterile, but could not describe what they looked like. Any pics or thoughts on this?

I'm pretty sure all hybrids are sterile, there might be some exceptions with closely related species. On a separate note, I was kicked out of facebook for not submitting to their relentless id requests, I don't miss it. Maybe you are meaning the eggs would be sterile? I think that does happen with unrelated species matings. People often post weird pairing pictures, I've seen them on actias.de, usually it's moths though. |

I lived in South Florida twice. Once each in Corral Springs and Lakeworth. I worked in Homestead/Redlands area both times.
I saw\observed hundreds if not thousands of Danaus plexippus and Danaus eresimus. I never saw\observed matings between any of the Danaus species.

I have never observed the pairings either. However I used to do hand pairings w different species of European Papilio and had ova; none ever hatched. I have listings for sale of hybrid moths and I believe the " butterfly zoos " get hybrid Heliconia.
