"Bee" (Syrphid) identification

Hi, I'm a new member to this board, I solely signed up to find assistance in identifying this species of bee.
Ideas ideas what type of flying insect this is? The patterning on its back is like nothing I've seen before.

I moved your post to the Bug Identification section, otherwise it is likely the right people may not see it.

This is not a bee but is a hoverfly, family Syrphidae. I assume that the photo was not taken in Times Square (but perhaps I am wrong), so please tell us where you photographed it.

Apologies that I cannot identify it past family myself, but I am sure someone here will be able to help.
