Not so true. I saw several coming out of St.Pauls Catholic Church last week here in Central Kentucky. Kentucky is in the northern hemisphere??

Penguins only exist in the Southern Hemisphere. I realize that, it’s just for the joke. But thanks for making note!

Hi Paul K,
Crappy spring continues here in NE Sask. as well... since last entry of April 19 it has been only single digit highs daytime & freezing every night. Saw only one additional winter hibernator butterfly sp... a female Satyr Comma (for a whopping total of 4 spp. hibernators only... no true spring emergent spp. yet!). First 4 days of May have seen snow every day (melts by evening & snows again every evening/over night!) Temp. right now at 2:50 pm is only +0.7 C (34 F) threatening yet more rain/snow/ice pellets/slush with constant heavy cloud cover. Absolutely awful mixed up weather.... went to a local greenhouse this morning to see some flowers to lift my spirits! No green grass.... not even a beautiful dandelion close to blooming....

The weather in central Kentucky is wet. Over an inch of rain this afternoon.
I spent most of the day putting specimens into my collection. After dinner I mounted 32 moths and 17 butterflies from my Pennyrile State Forest trip.
I have not checked my Bait Trap since Thursday. The rain has been off and on for several days. Looks to continue tomorrow.
Next up. I have five (5) Schimdt Box's of Speyeria from the Bear Tooth Platuae, the Clay's Butte area in Wyoming and from SW South Dakota as well. This could take a day or two.

Today May 5 first sunny and warm day of this year. We went to nearby woodlands and I saw many V.atalanta and few V.virginensis, N.antiopa and Polygonia. First spring butterfly Pieris virginiensis.
I think it is going to be good year for migratory species as here are a good numbers of them flew from south.

I visited several of my old haunts yesterday 8 May 2019. The sky was clear, lot's of sun with a high temperature of 78°F. First stop, Kleber WMA. I saw several Phoebis sennae. Could not get close for a wing shot. This is the earliest that I have ever found/observed them in central Kentucky. They looked in excellent condition. Maybe I will get a better shot today if the rain holds off this afternoon.
I also collected an American Copper, Lycaena phlaeas. I have only collected two specimens of Lycaena phlaeas here in Kentucky in 19 years. This makes three.
Swallowtails galore. I collected one yellow female and two dark females.
I set out two light traps. I will recover them this AM. I have still not set any bait traps out. Just cannot get into it yet. Afer I recover my Light Traps I am off to Rockcastle County to see what butterflies I can find. I truly like the Rockcastle River Valley area. Not a lot of butterflies but a very tranquil place to be and to walk about. (I have always liked that expression," Walk About". Paul,Hogan as Crocodile Dundee 1988).

The weather in central Kentucky has been wet with an overcast sky. However the baits traps were collecting numerous moths. Zales in particular were present in every bait Trap. I also found a very large male Luna moth lying on the ground next to a gas pumps at a Speedway.
I have more than fifteen Sessidae traps set out. Even with the wet weather to end Monday, it will be unseasonably cool with high temps in the low 60's until late in the week.
On my way home from church today I found a female Cecropia under a light on the wall of a Subway store. I seldom, if ever, find Cecropia moths at light.

Finally!... weather has warmed up... it was sunny with a strong, warm SW wind; today was the warmest day so far this spring maxing out at a whopping 22.5C (72F)! Observed my 1st spring emergent butterflies today, 12 May 2019... around a half dozen male Cabbage Whites (Pieris rapae), 3-4 male Mustard Whites (P. o. oleracea) & finally a lone male Spring Azure (Calastrina ladon lucia). All were very hungry & were avidly nectaring on a few pitiful, tiny Dandelions blooming on the protected south side of my house. Very late cold start up this point... grass is barely greening up... not a single leaf on any tree or shrub. Set out more light traps, but nights have been freezing almost every night so far in May.

The weather here in Ontario continues to be cold and rainy. It is May 14 and it is 7°C and feels like 4 with winds out of north. April has been one of the coldest here on record and May will follow. Only one warm, sunny day we had this year when I saw few butterflies. Please stop talking about global warming.

Last night I got two A1 male spring A. lunas and an A. polyphemus. It was the first real decent night we’ve had......calm and relatively warm. Hope to get out more as soon as our current rainy spell ends.

May 18, 10°C, clouds, showers or rain every day, still no butterflies. Very depressing spring or I should say warmer winter. There was a joke about Canadian seasons: in Canada there are two seasons: winter and July. It looks like this joke is becoming reality.
