Hey John Hyatt:
It was good to see you and Charlie Watson in Lexington. I found some old cabinets and drawers here in Lexington. I would like the cabinet, but not the drawers. They are dark brown with a white interior. (BioQuip Kits). To get the cabinet I must take the drawers. Are you interested in the drawers?

Well, it was 60 on Thursday, 38 on Friday 39 on Saturday with 2 inches of snow, 48 on Sunday with lots of sun, and today, sloppy rain 38 degrees.
I mounted/spread butterflies and moths all morning. Placed about 100 specimens into my collection. Took a nice nap with Momma and the kittens in the afternoon. Momma made Chicken and dumplings for dinner. Worked on my collection till 9:00. Life is tuff when when your retired.

Had some snow recently in southern Canada. I took the chance to go cocooning. Found about 20 promethea cocoons, but only about half were viable. I don't have a lot of specimens so I don't spend the winter mounting and curating. I try to be "out there" as much as possible looking for cocoons!
I must say, Leroy must be the best cocoon hunter on this website. The shear number he finds is astounding. It's possible he just happens to live in an area with high moth density, but surely skill plays a part. Do you still have that book Collecting Cocoons by Hussey and Pessino?

I got a copy for my birthday in 1962. It had just been publish in 1962 and my Grandmother got the copy at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the Museum Store. Although interesting, I was well advanced of Cocoon collecting skills, I had better equipment and knowledge of host plants.
I was not even in High School and I knew the where what and when of Cocoon collecting. I will admit, I found cocoons of Cecropia, Polyphemus, Promethia, and Angulifera, but never found a cocoon of a Luna moth.

We are getting some in the Sierra Nevada at the moment. Looks like another big storm is heading this way this evening. I wonder how the areas that burned in the Paradise, California area will take these rains, though the rain beetles should be out and about now in the western part of the mountains.

Hello again,
Weather update as of today 19 Jan. 2019... coldest night of this winter season in central, NE Sask. so far... minimum low temperature was -37.8 C (-35 F) & with windchill -40+ C (= -40 F)! Temp. now as I write this at 1:30 pm is -26 C (-15 F) sunny, light NE wind. Have around 20" snow so far; weird winter with waves of very warm & very cold weather... now a huge arctic cold front descending on much of Canada from Alberta east all the way to the Maritime provinces along the Atlantic. Severe cold warnings in effect across Canada. Gotta keep warm...ahhh... dreaming of warmer climates... oh... you lucky residents/collectors in the tropics!

We r getting 14-18” tonight. Roads are empty. State highways closed to trucks and busses last 3 hours. Bring it on. Tomorrow should be a blast once I turn off the traction control. I’m too old for skeeching too bad tomorrow will be perfect.
It was 80 in Orlando today. I’m sure papillons were flitting about.

Rather you than me brrrr - no thanks.
It's 28C daytime and sunny, falling to a "cool" 18C at night here. If it gets to 15C or less I feel COLD, so you can keep snow, ice, blizzards etc.
Adam.
