You guys are really ahead of time , here in Ontario we still have to wait six more weeks πππ. No snow here yet ( Toronto-Ontario-Canada ). And who says Canada is cold.πππ

We've had snow twice, once in the air, once on the ground.
Toronto doesn't get much snow, only cold (relative to this side of the lake)
We're going to get it today and this weekend. Bug season is now relegated to the research bench.

I shoveled for the first time a few weeks ago in Colorado. Since then it's been between 70 and 35 on any given day... If it weren't for a trip to Florida in a bit I'd have to hang up the net until spring.

Hi All,
Well, it's about 9:10 a.m. here in Gibsonia, PA - north of Pittsburgh. I was enjoying reading this, thinking how much I hate winter, but glad we hadn't had snow yet. And my wife just exclaimed "Wow - look outside!" Yep - it's here - looking like a mini-blizzard with the snow driving sideways... crap...
Cheers! Bandrow

Good grief John ! That seems like THE most unlikely place to ever find an insect collector. However, we all have to work with what we are given. I've always felt that I have lived in a depauperate fauna situation living in the corn belt of the Midwest states. Hope your area is scenic. Where I live scenic means traveling 5.5 hours to the other end of Southern Illinois or 2-2.5 hours west to the border of Iowa.

The 5.5 hour drive is worth it.

The 5.5 hour drive is worth it. Not sure what you mean, but Iβm less than 2βhr drive to exit NYS to a free state. Weather I can handle itβs the corruption and oppression that gets to me.

Trehoper said he's 5.5 hours away from Southern Illinois which is where I live. I was saying it's worth the drive.

Hey trehopr1,
The area I live in is actually only in central Sask.; there is still around another 400 miles N. to get to the NW Territories. My farm is located on the southern edge of the great Canadian northern boreal forest in a beautiful transition zone called the parklands... Very scenic... a far cry from the completely flat prairies of southern Sask. Tons of lakes, great fishing & hunting & pretty good insect collecting as well. We have around 150 butterfly spp. recorded for the province (I've collected 120 of them)... also have collected around 450 spp. of moths right in my yd. Fortunately not all the land around my immediate farm has been cleared of the native forest & I only have to go less than 20 mi. in any direction to get some good collecting... The winters can be long & cold, but we're used to it...

Winters are a great time to mount your back log of specimens and to curate your collection.
We had our first hard freeze Saturday night, down to 26Β°. And it was cold. As the expression goes, it was colder than Hillary Clinton's heart after that Billy Boy and Monica thing. And let me tell you, that is cold!
Another hard freeze will empty the trees of most of their leaves and makes the Cocoons visible.
There is a good look to everything.

Only rain here in eastern TN, but we've had a couple of hard (25-30 deg) freezes already and the garden is done 'cept for a few cold-weather veggies like turnips and collards. Sigh. How I hate to see the winter come. Cheers, jh
