What do you collect mainly robert61? Any special focus? Do you collect several different families? Cannot imagine having almost 900 drawers/boxes.... I think that even as much as I am a diehard collector I could only see myself maybe having up to 500 drawers or so. Much beyond that, I don't think I would ever be able to see or truely enjoy all that I have acquired because it would just be too much to look thru (too many Schmitt boxes, drawers, and other assorted boxes). Of coarse, if you happen to have a collection like Leptraps or Adam and it is ALL in drawers and ALL in cabinets and well organized; then I could see having a collection of such vastness.

Hi there, My name is Patricia I'm a journalist with a media group called Talk to the Press. We write for many of the major publications in the US and the UK, including USA Today, Inside Edition, ABC, Good Morning America, Washington Post and others and pay contributors for stories, photos and videos. I am looking to speak to someone who has an extensive bug collection and who would be open to chatting about this for an article, and who may have strong video and photos to support this. My email is patricia.murphy@swns.com or you can get in touch on us.talktothepress.com/

After the hammering we get in the press and the falsehoods that are liberally spread in "well-known" publications it won't be me.

Well said inachisio65 ! I very much doubt that you will find any such individual here foolish enough to take you up on your offer.. I suggest you go visit a museum for such an interview....

About 25 years ago I was interviewed by a journalist about my involvement with a well known Thai rock band (nothing to do with insects), with everything taped by them, but when the article was published it made me seem to be some sort of pervert. I don't know how they do it, but journalists have a habit of twisting truth into something else to make it a sensational read. Insect collectors already get unjustified bad press, so I rather doubt anyone will be interested in giving an interview.

One can only imagine what the finished article will read compared to what is actually said, never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Here in our newspaper was an article about a Lycaenid which larvae live in Ant nest - symbiosis. Very funny, the larva feed the ants, then from the butterflies the larva emerge. So before you have to prove that the journalist have enough knowledge and you must have the right to see it before it is published. If not, keep away.

I think we'd better stop commenting we don't want what we've already said the be published as "quotes" I can see it now, an exclusive look into the secret and closed off world of the wicked and obsessive butterfly hunter.

I can usually go to the approximate drawer for a specimen I want to look at from memory, but I also have an Excel file which lists what is in each drawer. Sometimes I need to use that to find what I am looking for.

I've found out what I'd always suspected somewhat. At 11 drawers, I'm far behind. Not exactly drawers, but cases in cabinets I've built, I buy the cases from Bioquip, the wood ones with tight fitting lids. I do use napthelene for pest control and it works well. I hope I spelled that correctly. Extra specimens are in riker mounts, and those need close attention for pests, but they are extras, and hanging on the walls all over the house. Maybe if I limited my hobbies to entomology, I'd have more, but what I do have are personally collected, raised or ex-livestock purchases. Some very impressive pictures and posts on this subject. I'd claim economics, but I also collect comic books and vintage toys from my era, another space and cash consuming endeavor.
