20 years of prison for smuggling five lizards from the Philippines? Are they completely retarded? I mean it’s illegal, and it’s really not great that two of the lizards died, and he definitely should be punished, but twenty years is just ridiculous. In Germany for rape you get only two years maximum, most of the time only probation and lately even only a “warning” because they say it’s better for the victim not to speak in court to face the situation again, but then it’s not possible to convict the rapist, what a crazy world we live in.
No sympathy for these guys. This was not a victimless crime; sentient higher animals endured unimaginable abuse and torturous deaths.
If the import regulations weren't so onerous, then these animals could simply have been imported safely and securely. Is it any less abusive and torturous to kill the animals by the thousands via deforestation that nobody cares about? If CITES and USFWS really cared about the welfare of animals they'd focus on deforestation, not the loss of a few specimens.
Yet we do nothing about habitat destruction...in fact most of us are part of the problem...
That's why we conveniently ignore things like housing development and let our little minds be focused on the "big news" that we are fed.
Such as automobile accidents. They're not accidents, they are negligence, pure and simple. But by and large we the public don't like to take the responsibility for an automobile collision, so "accident" is OK. Heck, it's supported by the police and insurance companies who have "auto accident" on the top of the form! But, as always, we need a scapegoat, and that's DUI. Go look up the NHTSB traffic fatality data for USA- annually about 80% of fatalities are not caused by DUIs. Doing the math, it's clear that those 20% that involved DUIs are actually caused by the non-DUI! Meaning you are some nine times more likely to be killed by a sober driver than a DUI. But there's no real punishment for killing somebody while sober...cause such an "accident" might happen to you or me.
And "gun buybacks". Buying back what? The government never owned these guns. There is no "buy back". Speaking of which, with over 90% of shootings being urban youths, why does everyone else get to suffer the knee-jerk laws? God forbid the government actually addresses the real problem.
No, all this infomercial type news is so hyped up, and the real problem continues on, and the sheeple eat it up.
