Catocala action has been a bit slow for me this year. Two weeks ago I made a trip to east Tennessee and met up with Bill G. where we encountered a good number of Catocala micronympha, C. andromedae, C. gracilis, C. ultronia, C. coccinata, C. ilia, (one I collected because of the black forewings and white reniforms) with Form "conspicua", and one Catocala sappho.

Jonn, I see that you posted on July 11 and got one C. carissima. Did you collect it where you live, or did you make a trip somewhere?

It has been a slow start for me as well. In the 2 weeks I have had my bait trap up I have seen 1 ultronia, 2 ilia, 1 serena and 1 neogama. I have had several sphinx moths, A. floridensis, D. myron and 1 S. abbottii. Quite a few comma and question mark butterflies and a couple of hackberry butterflies (A. celtis).

I have a box of papered cats collected in Brockport NY 2007. Identified (not by me) as 1 amatrix, 5 cara, 1 grynea, 5 neogamma, 1 piatrix and a couple sphingids. I dislike catocala so anyone want to give me $10 to cover shipping? Send me a PM and be patient as I'm gone the next two weeks.

I can see not collecting Catocala, but disliking them.... crazy!
Meanwhile in the Mass mtns I got one Catocala ilia on bait.
Today tapping trees in 90 degree weather we had a few connubialis, a few lineella, a couple amica, and a single C. innubens.
Now up to 11 species

Rayrard,
I agree. I had to reread the post several times because I could not understand "dislike" and "catocala" in the same sentence. I find those combination of words highly illogical.

Past Week: amatrix - 10+ ilia - 20+ piatrix - 30+ maestosa - 10+ muliercua - 10+ neogama - 2 ultronia - 5
All from bait. Was actually a bit too hot and didn't bother with tree tapping. Will be doing a lot in august though.

I thought some people may be interested to see a photo of the Catocala that I managed to rear this year. The two at bottom right are C. briseis from Canada but all the rest are from Primorye. Bob

Leroy, what are you using for bait and traps? Chuck I use a combination of Bait Traps. I currently have eight (8) Flat Bottoms, five(5) Slotted Pan Type and one lone Shadow Bottom Type Bait Trap set out in Scott, Franklin and Owen counties here in Kentucky. I like the Slotted Pan Type for results, however, they are messy and some what difficult to clean and maintain. I usually replace the Slotted Pan when the bait is about finished. I clean the Slotted Pans at home and re-use them in the next Slotted Pan Type Trap needing new bait. The current design for the Shadow Bottom is twelve (12) inch diameter. I am having a couple of fifteen (15) inch diameter traps being made. Is the Shadow Bottom a new design? I can't find any info on it.
