I will be surprised if I am the first one to collect a Catocala moth in 2017. I found a stunning male of Catocala micronympha in a bait traps. It currently resides on a spreading board.
I have collected Catocala moths in early April in Florida and Texas. My earliest record in Kentucky is 19 May 2003.

Good lord, we're just getting into the Saturnids, do we have to start Cats already? In my area, Cats are harbingers of the end of the short summer.

So far this spring I have encountered Catocala illecta, C. coccinata, and C. ilia here in Tennessee. Not many, but they are starting to show up.

This AM I found three Catocala ellecta in one Bait Trap.
I also found a Catocala micronympha on a tree beside a Bait Trap.
I traveled to Perry County, Indiana and set out six Bait Traps and a dozen Pheromone traps. I walked several roads looking for butterflies. Nothing unusual. I did take a nice series of Celastrina "something". They were rather small and all were males.

I thought I saw a catocala, but it turned out to be a pretty noctuid instead. Thank God.

Did I just trapped a beauty. Catocala serena. That is a new one for me. I also took several Catocala illecta and a Catocala connubialis. I collected the Catocala connubialis in a Light Trap in Powell County, Kentucky. Another Non-Underwing that has been a pest in the Bait Traps Euparthenos nubilis. It has been extremely variable here in Kentucky.
I will attempt to get about 6 or 7 more Bait Traps out this week.

I ran my light sheet night before last. No catocala yet for me either. I did get a perfect cecropia though so it was worth it.

I began my daily routine of checking my Bait Traps. I replaced all the Bait (Apples, Bananas and Sugar) on June 24. I collected numerous Catocala ilia and Catocala ultronia. But I found stunning specimen Catocala consors. It currently resides on a Spreading Board.
It has been unbelievable for butterflies, hundreds of Asterocampa celtis and clyton, Limenitis arthemis astyanax and archippus, Lethe anthedon, Megisto cymela, Polygonia comma and interrogationis, Nymphalis antiopa, and tons of moths. This could be a great year.

I noticed you have joined the Lepidopterist Society. You should report your Whitley County, IN record of Catocala dulciola to the Season Summary.
Yes, it is a Catocala dulciola. Confirm your catch with Moth Photographers Group.
If you click on the Check List number 8871, you can check out where it has been collected.

I got my first catocala last week, it was alive so I shoo'd it away.
Oddly, got a luna last night which is probably the latest I've ever caught one.

This last week I had a great run of some Catocalas. In eastern TN, I caught many C. andromodae, minutas, micronymphas, and plenty of coccinata. Saw others, but were not as numerous. By numerous, I mean I caught twenty coccinatas and thirty andromodae. Oh, C. grynea were also abundant. For once, ilia was not around much.

I got another C. dulciola on July 4th. It is not perfect condition though.
