You still have to learn the external anatomy of Coleoptera and use keys to identify most of them. Picture books don't work for me. June beetles can't be identified to species by picture books. You have dissect the genitalia and compare it to the actual genitalia. Besides, it's part of the scientific process. Jeff Prill

Bill,
I thank you for the heads up and recommendation on this book. Received it yesterday from Amazon. What a great deal! And the best beetle book in my library. I owe you one.

I bought the Eastern Book. Very nice book for a Lepidopterist who needs some help with Beetles. Any update on the Western Beetles book? Starting to go through the beetles I have collected at lights over the years....
I saw the article that says A Evans is working on a Western volume. Hopefully the HBO series does not get ahead of him!

Hello again Beetle Enthusiasts,
A heads up...just got an email from Pemberley Books (Eng.). A.V. Evans new volume, the most welcome "Beetles of Western N. Am." will become available in Aug. 2021. It is available for preorder now at Pemberley, but should be widely available online everywhere by then. Book is same format as Eastern Beetles with 1,500 illustrations. Can't wait to get a copy!

John K. I was just lamenting last night about my pathetic beetle book, it covers all of NA, and it just doesn't do the job, even my book of northwest insects, doesn't even mention rain beetles, (please don't make me look up the Latin). So- I went and was looking at Bioquip, and there is Evans's new beetle book for 45$. Fast forward- Apparently release day is 8-17, and I caved in to the giant, I get free shipping...it's just one of those things. Rest assured though- my mobile carrier will not force me to "upgrade" to a 5g flatphone in January, two went target practicing, and only 1 came back. I can't afford a "free" phone androgynous sales rep.

Beetles of Western North America , Arthur V. Evans Yup. Mine showed up today, I like it, and it's going to get plenty of use. Without actually reading it as yet, it does have a lot of great features, for instance, pictures, and after a cursory look, a lot of useful information about ranges, and times when collecting is likely. Some of the pictures aren't going to satisfy everyone, and I'm not sure why the species content isn't in alphabetical order, but there's probably a reason I'm not aware of. In any event, now I can correctly id the rest of my locally caught beetles. New books are great!
