Nice post!
I started collecting at 14-15 years old, 15 years ago.
I developped my passion with a French forum 10 years ago (www.insecte.org). I have met a lot of specialists (Denis Keith for Melolonthidae and Rutelidae, Pierre Tauzin for Cetoniidae, Alain Audureau for Cerambycidae, Daniel Prunier for Carabidae, etc...), and now, I build a collection of coleoptera (mainly Scarabaeoidea).

I was eight. First catch was a male Junonia coenia. My interest went postal when I received a copy of the Butterfly Company's catalog. I still remember their address to this day. 51-17 Rockaway Beach Blvd Far Rockaway New York 11691.

That address brings back memories, Mike. I spent many hours drooling over those catalogs, trying to decide which specimen to spend my meager earnings on.

I started when I was six, got my first net and box from a college student my father, a professor of botany and plant systematics, taught. She gave me supplies and tips and sent me on my merry way (I think because I was a precocious six year old and it got me out of her and everyone else's hair). Now I have co-authored papers with her. A long way from drying mounted sulphurs on the dash of car parked in the hot Florida summer sun. If anyone noticed a drastic shortage of sulphurs about 23 years ago it's because I was in the process of permanently losing my mind!
4H is sort of agriculture club in the US, btw. Stands for Heart, Hand, Head and Health. Never joined myself but both parents were members as youth. I think it is associated with the Food and Drug Administration.

I began at the old age of 49! But I have always been interested in Nature, animals, herps, etc. When I was much younger my passion was for collecting Native American artifacts but after moving to N.C. I have found them to be nearly non-exixtent here (unless I have not found that SPECIAL spot yet) Cheers, Darrell (Arrowhead)
