Hello
I would like to purchase at good price, D'Abrera's books "Butterflies of the Oriental Region", part 1 and part 2.
What do you think about these books ? Are they ok to identify most of leps from Indonesia and Thailand ?
Does someone here can help me find them? Maybe one member of the forum want to get rid of it. Just send me an email.
Thanks

What do you think about these books ? Are they ok to identify most of leps from Indonesia and Thailand ? I won't say what I think of these books - they're by D'Abrera - need I say more? However if you just want to try to identify everything and you don't mind outdated classification along with a few mistakes and omissions, there's probably nothing else and you could do a reasonable job with it. A word of warning on Indonesia; the Oriental region volumes only include western Indonesia. The Moluccas, Buru, Timor and all points east are in the Australian volume. Bob

Thanks Bob. I agree with you on D'Abrera's works but until someone write a better book, I need his to ID hundreds of unidentified species from my collecting trips.
What about Sulawesi ? Is it in Australian or Oriental books ?

Perfect. Thank you Bob. Sulawesi is sometimes treated as part of Maluku, sometimes not.

Hello, I have received part 2, but I am still looking for Part 1 of D'Abrera's "Butterflies of the Oriental Region" if someone wants to sell one.
Still many Danaidae and Papilionidae from Sulawesi to identify.

A guess is that when someone wants to collect a series - they would get the first one first. This makes the subsequent ones last and most available.

For the precise identification of the butterflies in Indonesia and Thailand, I recommend the following books. All books are written in English, very helpful for you. [Indonesia] TSUKADA, "Butterflies of the Southeast Asian Islands" series Vol.1-5 - This huge volumes covering Papilionidae, Pieridae, Nympahlidae and Danaidae from almost all species in Indonesia up to subspecies level. Unfortunately Lycaenidae and Hesperidae are not published. English versions were also published and you may find them in some book seller in Europe. (But I think they are not so cheap!) Or visit the libraries of the museum like NHM. [Thailand] Ek-Amunay (2006), "Butterflies of Thailand" - Very useful covering all families with full-color figures. But unfortunately including quite a few misidentifications and doubtful data. So some Japanese experts published the correction of this book. Kimura et al. (2011), "The Butterflies of Thailand" vol.1 - Very recently published. This volume covers Hesperidae, Papilionidae and Pieridae. This book includes the complete synonimic list of all the species illustrated. Great work! Short book review is available from the following URL; bsj.blog.so-net.ne.jp/2012-01-25I do hope my comment is useful for you. Many Japanese butterfly enthusiasts are interested in butterflies of Indonesia and Thailand. Cheers, Mokky
