Says he is in California, but notice the English used in his email below. Makes me suspicious, but I need one Hemaris diffinis, a common USA sphinx moth and he is the only respondent. Email follows:
Hi Bob,Thx 4 your order & the opportunity to be of imminent supply service. Your requested Hemaris diffinis is now being reserved in your behalf in wait of your $15 certified check payable & remitted to Wayne Richfield,P.O. Box 1055,Goleta,CA 93116-1055. Order delivery will have been made to the mailable address u provide. Best regards, Wayne

This most likely won't help much since I haven't actually bought from him but I can share some info to help as much as I can.
Things that made me cautious: Not accepting PayPal. not providing sources to prove he was a legitimate seller. He told me I could ask Clark about him because he claimed to buy from Clark at a fair but Clark said he didn't remember him so that fell through. When I was willing to provide sources with feedback of my sales and purchases and requested that he send the package first then I would send the money, he never replied again.
Some things that may be legitimate (use your own judgement): He uses a email server which is specifically for seniors who are not comfortable with computers which may explain the Paypal and English use. He offered to mail me a copy of his research. The specimens he offered were not A- or A2 which leads it to be more believable.
I'd also like to here more info about this seller so if you do work out a transaction with him keep us updated.

Thanks for the input. Using Google, I did locate a 71 year old Wayne Richfield in Santa Barber, California and Goleta is a city in southern Santa Barber County. So, I'll gamble $15 to see if this is legit and will keep everyone informed

The name sounds familiar. About 20 years ago I was dealing with an American trader whose name I can't remember but who messed me around for about 18 months with lots of excuses as to why he hadn't sent my paid for order. I believe I finally got it after reporting him to the LepSoc. A while later I got a list from somebody who had bought all his stock after he went out of business; I couldn't swear to it but I believe this was Wayne Richfield. I think I probably placed an order with him and as I remember nothing about it I assume it went through smoothly.
I'm afraid it's not a lot of help but that's what I vaguely remember.

I too think this name is familiar from years back. If not mistaken he had a list which was actually a book and ran into hundreds of pages. I dont recall buying from him or hearing anything bad about him so for $15 maybe worth taking the chance ?

That is most certainly that worthless trash, was it Wayne? Richfield from Goleta that was/is the worst crook in the USA insect market. Do you remember his credit vouchers that lose value each day until they are no longer valid? He would get specimens form people and send them those certificates instead of money. He is a very bad one. Do not send him any money unless you would like to buy one of his credit vouchers......................................
He would also offer very rare specimens that he did not have. When you sent him payment for one of those, you would receive a credit voucher that would decrease in value each day you held it. Very bad one...........

Yes, he is a well known scam artist from back in the days when there were not too many scam artists known and most dealers were good and honest. Don't take a single chance,,,ever with this one.

I've met Wayne in person when I lived in Santa Barbara. I've traded a little with him in the past and can't really say I was blown away with our transaction. The specimens I received were in great shape, I just think he values some species disproportionately. For example he wanted a very rare hemileuca in a 1:1 trade for a semi-common Catocala he bread from Arizona. He sent me 6 ex-pupae Catocala and I returned 3 Hemileuca (he asked for 6 though). A real evaluation may have been 1 Hemileuca for 6 Catocala.
In the end I didn't feel ripped off since I knew him personally, I tend to give away a lot of specimens anyway to fellow collectors. But if he was a stranger I might have gotten ticked... But I think he is honest, and a bit out of touch. I really can't imagine him intentionally scamming anyone though. But, please keep us informed on your latest trade papilio!

He may have mended his ways to get some money now. He used to work under the name W. Bryce Richfield. Too bad he has not sent back the money he scammed from people in the past .

Good to know. I may have been a lucky one. Doubt I would do business with him that involved serious money.

I traded with Wayne once. My package was destroyed unfortunately during shipping. He still sent me specimens. I've seriously upgraded my shipping containers after this mistake. Recently been working on another trade will keep everyone posted. My parcel should be here this week.

Saw the note below in an old Lep Soc publication. You would order say a pair of P. coelus for $5,000.00 from him. He would claim to have sold out. He would send you a voucher for $5,000.00. The next week the voucher would be worth $4,000.00, the next week $3,000.00, the next week nothing. Total scammer from the past. He ripped off several friends of mine back when.
"A WORD OF CAUTION•••••••••• When you purchase or sell specimens with a Dealer or specimen supply firm, make It a point to read and fUlly understand the terms of sale. Do this before sending any money or specimens. Many members of the Lepidopterists' Society have conducted business with W. Bryce Richfield of Goleta, California and have had some very unsatisfactory results. However, had these members read the terms and condition of sale, these situations could very well have been avoided. W. Bryce Richfield clearly states In his terms and condition of sale that the dealer has the option to exchange, replace, refund, or Issue a voucher. On unfilled orders or parts there of, a backorder or voucher may apply. He further states that unlike other dealers, he does not, with rare exception, refund, and is not legally obliged to do so. W. Bryce Richfield operates and conducts his business from a Post Office box and does not list a phone number. Before doing business with W. Bryce Richfield or any other dealer or firm, be sure"

Just a comment. I think some buyers have a severe misunderstanding about the meaning of "terms of sale". This is obvious now in e-bay. Apparently many people believe that if the seller write down an outrageous condition in the terms of sale, the buyer is liable to follow them. For example if the terms of sale are: "We do not accept returns. If you complaint, we will kill you". This does not entitle the seller to legally kill you, if something happens, and you complaint. Terms of sale need to be within a legal framework, and the conditions be reasonable. Otherwise they are a scam, pure and simple.

Trying to get a follow up on Wayne Bryce Richfield. Anyone made a deal or been in contact with this person in the past year, few months. Looking into several entomological societies news letters (back 1987) I found this address (still in use???): P.O. Box 1066-M, Goleta, CA 93116-1066 USA Is this guy honest, can he be trusted for insect sale? Looking forward to reading you comments.
