Ok, Europe and North Africa are out of the picture, so what about collecting in the Dominican Republic, Mexico or any other Central American country? I would be mostly interested in Nymphalids, and Papilio/eurytides/battus species. Also would not mind going to Argentina, but it may be a little late in the season for collecting there. So - March would be towards the end of the dry season along the Atlantic in Central America - not very good. Belize would suck - Panama might be right on the money. You can research this on the web - just make sure that the rains pick up about a month before you hit an area, especially if you want to see interesting Papilionidae. If you hit a CA country with decent mountains that would compensate for the season. You could move to an elevation that is in sync with bugs. Or diapausing bugs might be at altitude waiting out the season. The DR - could be great in March. That would be the beginning of the rains in part of the country, and based my "winter" trips there, the mountains seem pretty good year round. The key to success in CA and the DR, is to be mobile. Do not lock yourself into an itinerary that may or may not coincide with decent collecting. Get a fairly high road clearance car and be prepared to move around to find the conditions that you want. Be forewarned that driving in the DR is a sport! I actually like it, but my wife generally keeps her eyes closed in the mountians and especially in Santo Domingo and Santiago. I can recomend some places in the DR where you stay right in some pretty good collecting areas. send me a private email if you are interested. Shuey

By late March a lot of the southern U.S. has collecting, although it's just starting in most areas. The desert areas of southern California and Arizona can have some interesting things. It's been kind of a cold and wet winter, which means things are getting started later than normal this year.

I was planning a French Guyana trip someday but the website on the place in Panama is very interesting. Anyone know if Panama is difficult to get permission to leave with insects?
