I have a question about breeding mantises. How long does the sperm last once a male mates with a female? I mated my female carolina mantis a week ago. So would she still have sperm if she doesn't lay her eggs for a while? That is if she has eggs developing becuase she just molted her last molt 3 weeks ago. should I mate her two times? I didn't mate her too early right?
Okay I have some experience although it is limited to one species (Heirodula majuscula). So if she allowed him to mate, it would indicate that she is probably sexually mature. My guess is that given that females often eat males after or during copulation the sperm is stored as it is in many ohter insects, so no I would not think multiple matings are needed, remmember matises invest a lot of energy producing a single ootheca so they are in no rush to do so and so it takes some time for this to occur.
Interested to know whether you did mate her again and the outcomes achieved... I was reluctant to reply thinking there would be more qualified mantis brains here to give you their insight
