Every year I say I'm going back and don't make it. If I'm going to do it this year I'd better plan now.
Anybody have firm plans for late July-ish?

Chuck -- I have a trip booked to try for the last weekend in July in SE AZ. I checked in with Evan and a few folks, for suggestions and it sounds like a good weekend. Be fun to meet you and any others that head down there. It will be my first trip to that area, so it should be a blast for me with lots of new finds. -- Eric

Bill -- are you using photography light stands for the tall bulbs? I used a tripod last year but it didn't have enough height to clear my sheet all the time. I think that's sub-optimal (?). Was looking for something that would be a bit taller with the threads for the MV bases I have (standard Bioquip/Leptraps bases).

Mine are actually discarded chart stands for old science learning charts from when I taught biology......now retired. The link below kind of shows the concept idea, but shopping around will no doubt save $. www.fullcompass.com/prod/239744-Kupo-KS140911

Where do you plan to stay? Last time I was there I took my generator on the aircraft..doubt I can do that again. What do you plan to do for power? Chuck

I am staying at the Santa Rita Lodge, although probably mostly for sleeping in the morning . The generator is a tricky one. I am considering two paths right now. 1 -- drain the fuel and oil out and UPS it to the hotel and back and 2 -- just rent one somewhere (Home Depot as a last resort as that's expensive, but not sure of any other options). If anyone else has ideas other than these, help a Noob out.

Dr. Bruce Walsh at the U. of AZ sometimes has an extra generator or two that he lets people borrow. You can contact him through his Moths of Southeastern Arizona website.

Eric/Chuck,
I will be there 27-31 July, also staying at the Santa Rita Lodge. If anyone can help with directions to good sites in Harshaw Creek, Copper Canyon, California Gulch, or any other recommended sites, it would be much appreciated. Focused on getting cincta, calletta, and gloveri, which I didn't get last year. Would love to link up. Matt

Man! I am pumped to get to go there this year. Sadly, I am heading before all you guys are heading out. I am going on July the 15th through the 18th. Might be a wee bit early for many of the good bug, or might be amazing. I'm crossing my fingers. Am thinking about going to look for A. randa, but the couple of places that I have tried for them are kinda sketchy, lol Luckily, the friend I am going with is ex military as well, and we will both be carrying just in case. I will definitely let you guys know if we hit the motherlode. lol

joee30,
You may want to reconsider the dates you are traveling to AZ. If you want to hit the bug jackpot, timing is everything. The best time to be there is about 2 weeks after the monsoon rains start, which is usually late July to early August. If you arrive before then, you could miss the whole show. If you aren't locked into mid-July, keep an eye on the AZ weather and let the weather determine when you leave. My guess is that the guys who are going in late July will have the best chance to get the bugs. Not that you won't get anything in mid-July, but the odds are usually much better a couple of weeks later. If there hasn't been any rain, the bugs won't come out.

Eric, Chuck, Matt, et al.,
It's looking more like monsoon season every day over here. I live near the Chiricahuas.
Work hard, stay in school, save your money, and get a good lawyer and you too can live the dream.

Thanks 58Chevy. I put in a request for 4 days of PTO since I have 95.00 I saved up. If it is approved, I shall be heading that way on Thursday the 28th of July and coming back on 2nd August. Good five days of collecting. Hopefully I can meet some of you guys down there.
