Hello everybody
I am travelling to North Thailand (Chiang Mai) for 2 weeks during the end of May/start of June.
What can I expect to come to my white sheet and either 160w MBT bulb or 40w Actinic (if being overlooked is a problem there)
I am renting a house out and have been granted the use of a lightbulb or trap to see what moths are their.
I've been on the photographic website featuring moths of northern Thailand, but there are no dates on any of the captures.
Is the end of May and the start of June any good for moth species and numbers?
Also I will be taking a suitcase so need to travel light! any tips on what I will need to take?
Regards
Ben

Hi Ben,
It will be a good idea to comment what families will you be looking for, this way we could help you better.
I can ask an entomologist friend from Khon Kaen, he is specially interested in Sphingidae but he also collects other moths while in the field. Just let me know what are you looking for.
Regards,
Alejandro A.

Ben,
You'll be most welcome! Perhaps you can e-mail me on adamcot at cscoms dot com with more information about where you will be staying etc and I'll try to give some advice (as best I can).
A lot depends upon when the rains start as to the species flying. In early May the SW monsoon normally kicks in, with several days of heavy rain. That triggers the mass emergence of moths. Last year it didn't rain in May at all, so everything was late. Early June may be a little late for some species.
Adam.
PS. Dave, I'm not sure that I can advise better than everyone else about moths, especially as I'm a Papilio man, but I'm always happy to help.

Adam, I would have thought you would be the most experienced with Leps in general having actually lived there for several years even though you are a (very good) Papilio man!. How is the eye coming on by the way? And the baby? Cheers, Dave

I guess I have lived here for "several years" now, 30 years in fact! I don't do any mothing nowadays, although I did a fair amount in the late 1980s, when I was helping researchers from the NHM, London.
As for the eye, it's improving slowly I think, but it will be some time before I can get back to proper work on my Leps. I have an appointment at the hospital again on Monday. The baby is doing well now, he came home from hospital a week ago today, and is fully recovered; thanks for asking.
Adam.
