"Self-ballasted bulbs are really simple, but they get really hot, and can explode in rain, or if wind knocks the rig around I've had them burn holes in my sheet and melt parts of my pvc frame. They're also usually more expensive, less available, and have fewer options for different power (300 watts is the maximum I've seen)".
I am using *500* watts self-ballasted...Yes, they get hot...Yes, rain can blow them... I have the luxury of running my lights in a 2 acre insect paradise, from my study...At the first sign of rain I just switch them off...There's always another night...

1st of all i would like to start by saying nice rig and hope it works well for you. now it looks light but factor in the generator you have to tote. just wanted to post because i know lots of kids would like a set up like that. i have devoloped a sheet rig that by far out does my MV set up, and is ran off 12v. Its been tested in high light pollution and works well. I sold a mock up to as kid down the rd. He is like 7 or 8 and can lug it way out in the woods no problem. It all fits in a duffle bag stands about 6.5ft, and no cords or ropes to trip on that was the only downfall i see to your setup was trip hazard. Not cutting yours down just a lil insite to it all

That's great, mwes. I'm sure everyone would love to see some pictures or illustrations of your ideas. I also have a 12 volt setup, which is very light and doesn't require a generator. (pictured here: www.insectnet.com/cgi/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=read_count&om=2228&forum=DCForumID1). If there are trees around, I can hang my sheet from a thin length of cord and leave the frame, ballast, and generator at home. However, I haven't found a way to run more than 40-60 watts of light off of a 12 volt battery yet. At least not without hauling a battery pack that outweighs a small generator. The advantage of the setup pictured here is the sturdy, lightweight frame for hanging the sheet. You can substitute any light source you want depending on where you're going and how much light you think you'll need. But my frustration has been trying to find a good place to hang the sheet when I'm in the back country--someplace where it will stay put without blowing around whether I'm in a parking lot, a meadow, a backyard, or on a steep hillside. This is one effort to solve that problem. Best wishes, Travis

well i do sell a sheet rig that contains no cords and is very stable no matter what type of bulb takes about 2 or 3 miin to set up luckly i have an elctronic genius for a best friend lol we did alot of research and found alot of people say that the MV light source is a lil intenst hence why moths come in so rapidly and behave so erratic we use a less intense light lower wattage but are made for attracting insects of course the ballast have to be home made i got pics of my MV set up

Hard to see much detail in that pic. Can't tell what's going on. Do you happen to have another of the 12 volt setup with no cords?
Also, I've never heard anyone say that less light will bring in more specimens/species. I usually use a BL tube and a MV bulb together and have consistently had more success with the MV bulb than without it. Any other takes on that? Mr. Koehn?
Best, Travis

i know its wierd man i have bucket traps thgat i made for studies and what not i put an MV trap in a very well known spot and my new lights setup with a 40watt dc trap and had more in the 40 watt trap i did that for a week then switched and put the 40 watt where the MV trap was and it out performed there too so thats when i got my idea for sheet that and i had to find a way not to tote a gen in the woods and i have learned that its not the more light but hue it self and the light set up im using the hue is almostt he same as the MV
