This is a 50,000 year old fossil water beetle, Cybister explavatus, in a sand/ tar matrix from a Californian tar pit. The specimen smells of tar. The matrix has bits of other beetles embedded in it. The body length is a little over 35mm.
I love it because it combines two passions, insects and fossils.
