Well, today was my 1st sighting of a "spring" butterfly. While doing a little front yard clean-up a Cabbage (P. rapae) (male) flew right on by me at (3:06 pm).
Here, about an hour W. of Chicago (every year) cabbage butterflies are our first harbingers of spring. From their appearance (onward) things only get better. Today's high only reached 65 degrees but, it was a truly un-hindered full sunlight blue sky day !
Typically, I encounter this common but, "uplifting" species sometime during the month of April. However, this year we have had a mighty tough go of things (weather-wise) so our April was mostly cold (mid-30's thru mid-40's); with no chance of hatching temps.
Every year since 1998 I have recorded my 1st sightings (here) of Pieris rapae; our spring "announcer"...
