I am working through my photos and videos from my trip with my daughter to Belize. I'll post here periodically as I upload to Flickr.com.
Many thanks to those who made this trip possible:
Jshuey - got me connected to the right people in Belize
Robin and Louise Greaves - Owners of the Green Hills Butterfly Ranch
Mike Barton and family - Owners of Mikes Place Belize (The place where we stayed)
Pre travel data to know:
1. Photograph everything on your phone in case you lose a document. This was especially important as my daughter has a passport which required me to show the US the death certificate of her mother. Belize officials wanted to see that death certificate as well and I did not bring it. It was on my phone.
2. I travelled with mid level nets from Amazon.com. I like to give the nets away to locals to collect after I leave. The hope is that they collect for me or at least enjoy looking at the natural world around them even more.
3. Luggage - So myself and my daughter had 2 backpacks which were no additional charge. A checked bag was around $50-$70 one way. You can buy a good large suitcase at the market center in Belmopan and additional clothing for about $50USD. The cost to take a checked suitcase there and back is about $140 USD. Or, go without one and buy clothes and a new one and travel back for a cost of about $120USD.
4. Rather than rent a vehicle I found that it was a lower cost to have Mikes Place do the driving. This fit well as I have a policy to hire a guide whenever possible.
5. Vaccines - Belize does require a C-19 vaccination to enter the country. I thought a Yellow Fever vaccine was required and paid out of pocket to get one. It turns out that Belize does not require a Yellow Fever vaccination if traveling from the USA as there is no current outbreak of it in the USA.
More posts will be coming but here are some panorama photos from our trip...
After a hot day collecting, we would cool off next to the aquifer fed river and cave. No piranha or crocodilians. Snakes..... Yes. This is about 100 meters from the house we rented.
