Recently, our forum member exoticimports posted a
picture of this menacing looking yet, variably colored
cerambycid species of notoriety.
I consider this species a "wonder" even amongst members
of it's huge family (Cerambycidae). As for appearances
I place it 2nd in terms of vicious "looks"; only giving
the nod to Macrodontia for carrying the title.
However, combine the striking and variable coloration of
the species with its general "gnarly" appearance and well,
you've got one heck of a "cult status" type item amongst
beetle enthusiasts.
Now, to the best of my knowledge all of the specimens which
I have ever seen (at least 20) have come out of Colombia. I
am honestly uncertain if it is found elsewhere but, others
will be certain to let us know...
The species color-band is broad (almost like an artist palette);
with primary colors of black, emerald green, red with a coppery tone,
and a deep purple. Factor in specimens with bi-color or even tri-color
schemes and well it wouldn't be hard to have a couple drawers of
it if your money held out !
Here's a large red/copper toned example.
The next 2 photo's feature some other variously
colored (large) units from a friends collection.
Females are likewise gaily colored as well yet, they
are typically a bit smaller than (large) males and their
protective elytra don't quite cover their abdomens.
I have been fortunate to achieve getting a pair
of those deep purple ones I've mentioned.
So, while these are just a few token examples of
this marvelous beetle it is clear it creates a sensation
with its very presence !
Many years ago, large (male) examples could be more
readily had but, I'd say these last 25 or more years have
seen many more smaller - medium (sized) examples
largely offered on the market.
A remarkable species to highlight for tonight's discussion.
