There is a large scoliid wasp that is native to S. Texas and Mexico. I think it is Campsomeris ephippium. It looks like a giant male velvet ant (red & black). There is a picture on bugguide. It's about the same size as a large cicada killer. I have found other (smaller) species in the Houston, TX area. I don't have extra specimens at this time, but I might be able to catch some this spring/summer.

C. ephippium is a very impressive wasp. It also occurs past Mexico all the way to northern South America.
Great to hear you collect around Houston! The only species I've been able to find in the Houston area is Campsomeris plumipes.
Could you PM me a photo of the other species? I can likely get a name on it for you.

I don't have photography software, so I'll have to send you large (2mb) files if you want pix. Send me your email and I'll send pictures (after I take them). My camera doesn't do well with closeups. My email: dkent3@gmail.com
