The New York Times, Dec 3, 2013 contains a review of a new edition of Bernard Durin's 1980 book "Beetles and Other Insects", larger-than-life watercolor portraits. Amazing detail.

Here in NC anyway, at many intersections along major highways there are plantings of shrubs, day lilies, poppies, etc and occasionally one sees signs stating "Do not mow" presumably to protect the planted areas. In such venues it would probably be imprudent to wander around with a net if only because passers-by would wonder who the hell is that but would it be illegal?
papilio 28570, here in the western part of the state we are lucky to just have copperheads and timber rattlers 8^)

Being a beetle guy I've always used a jar of alcohol below the funnel. But poking through the mess afterwards looking for the beetles leaves a lot to be desired. Ethyl acetate seems a better way to go. Should the chemical just be sprinkled on gypsum/cotton/whatever scattered on the bottom of the trap or would putting the substrate plus chemical in a small container placed on the bottom of the trap work better? It would seem that the small container would last longer between charges but maybe that would not get the vapor concentration high enough. With a relatively tight trap that might not matter. Comments appreciated.

The MSDS for Klean-Strip MEK Substitute states that the solvent is a mixture of acetic acid (think vinegar) and ethyl acetate, maybe 5-6% acetic acid but that is my guess. That your brand of MEK Substitute evaporated with no residue suggests that acetic acid was not present, the acid not being very volatile. Either way the bugs die. And I add my thanks for the heads up.
A UK Safety Data Sheet for MEK Substitute listed acetone, >90%, as the major ingredient, so you Brits beware 8^)

In the past I've purchased pins from Petr Kabatek in Praha, CZ but recent attempts to contact him have been unsuccessful. Does anyone know if he is still in business?

After 10 years of light trapping for beetles 2012 seems to be the worst ever for me. It would be interesting to hear how others are doing, good or bad. Maybe it was all those tornadoes in the early spring 8^(

I've collected them in Ashe and Surry Counties in NW North Carolina but haven't seen them elsewhere in the state.

If you are handy with an electric drill and tin snips it is easy to make bucket traps. I use 3.5 or 5 gal buckets and make the vanes and funnels from aluminum flashing from Lowes or the like. Some folks use battery powered camp lights for the light source, just replace the bulb with a UV bulb. Caveat: I'm a beetle guy so those #^&@*leps just mess things up.

I misread the subject line thinking someone had created a monster. Let's see how creative we can get, a beetle with lep wings or whatever, the wilder the better. Photos would be required. And, yes, there are many of us who don't have time for such nonsense but it would be fun.

I've seen several at UV lights in eastern NC since the first of June so they are around. I have none for trading however, sorry.

I have a North Carolina specimen (no photo available, sorry) that keys out to a female C. fimbriolatus with the exception that there is no yellow margin anywhere. Comments or suggestions gratefully accepted.
